ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation

ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation Making Life Better for Children With Cancer and their Families ASK provides assistance, support, and kindness to make life better for children with cancer.

While the hospital and medical staff focus on treatment, ASK works to provide the quality of life support needed to make life with cancer less traumatic from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. ASK supports the ASK Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. We fund a child psychologist, chaplain, and child life therapist

who work at the clinic and provide immediate services to children and their families during cancer treatment. Educational challenges often affect children who miss school due to their cancer diagnosis and treatment. We contract with an educational consultant to provide tutoring, neurological psychological testing and evaluation, college and vocational advice, and after-school and summer enrichment to children currently in and recently past treatment to combat those problems. Young children's preschool or kindergarten experiences are sometimes postponed or interrupted during cancer treatment. ASK partners with First Baptist Weekday School to offer First STEP preschool to meet the unique educational, social, and emotional needs of young children with chronic illness as they go through the process of healing. ASK offers social support to families by sponsoring monthly family discussion groups for both oncology and sickle cell patients at our offsite office and meeting space. Educational workshops specifically designed for teens, long-term survivors, siblings, families of newly diagnosed children as well as bereaved families are planned throughout the year. A cancer diagnosis can create a heavy financial toll on a family, so ASK offers assistance to families in crisis. We have helped families pay for housing, utility bills, overnight hotel stays, parking and meal tickets at the hospital, groceries, and funeral expenses. ASK partners with the YMCA to offer Moving Forward, a fun and dynamic physical fitness program designed to help survivors improve strength, mobility, coordination, endurance, balance, and self-esteem. Each participant receives personal training and a family membership for one year. Throughout the year ASK sponsors fun social events for the children and their families, including birthday parties, high school graduation, a springtime gathering at the zoo, laser tag, spa day, a party at the Children's Museum of Richmond, and a holiday party. All of these services are provided free of charge to the children and their families who are being treated at the ASK Pediatric Oncology Clinic at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Sometimes, the biggest reason to celebrate is simply being here together. 💛🎉

This year’s ASK Kourageous Kids Celebration was extra special! We honored 1️⃣2️⃣ Kourageous Kids from across Richmond and Fredericksburg—and, for the first time, welcomed some of our Young Adult Cancer Survivors (YACS) to celebrate alongside them.

The day was all about celebrating our Kourageous Kids and YACS for everything that makes them who they are and reminding us all that they are so much more than their diagnosis. For families currently in active cancer treatment, seeing our YACS offered hope and a glimpse of the life that can come after treatment. We’re honored to be part of their journeys and to share their stories with our community. 🌎🖐️

Thank you to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden for their incredible support and for helping make this year’s celebration so special for our ASK Kids, YACS, and their families. 🌻💙

💛 Did you know that the impact of childhood cancer extends far beyond hospital walls?

The journey doesn't end when treatment is over—which is why our families need a dedicated community standing beside them to raise awareness and advocate for their needs.

Childhood cancer disrupts lives and learning, but when we raise our collective voice, we help ensure these resilient children get the support, resources, and care they need every step of the way.

Join us in standing with Virginia’s families. Turn compassion into action this September by taking the Heart of Gold pledge today!

What does Making Life Better actually look like for families facing childhood cancer? 💛

💛Immediate financial support from the moment of diagnosis.
🫂Connecting with other families who understand what you’re going through.
📚Someone in your corner when your child needs accommodations to continue their education.

Whatever our families need along the way, we’re here to help from diagnosis through treatment, and beyond.

Connection was in full bloom at the ASK Family Center! 💐🌼

ASK Caregivers from Richmond and Fredericksburg spent the day making dried flower wreaths, sharing lunch, and enjoying some much-deserved time together.

One ASK mom shared:

“I hope there are more workshops like this for parents and caregivers. The morning and afternoon were just awesome, chatting with other ASK mamas, making a homemade wreath, and having lunch together!”

Moments like these are part of how we Make Life Better, reminding families that they don’t have to walk this journey alone. 💛

🎉 Celebrating 5 years at the ASK Family Center!

Over the past five years, the ASK Family Center in Richmond has given us more opportunities to bring our families together. From summer camp and sibling get-togethers to events just for parents and caregivers, there’s something for every member of the family. 💛

Most importantly, the ASK Family Center is a true home for our community, a place where kids can be kids and families can feel less alone during the childhood cancer journey.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Family Center possible and everyone who has made memories here over the past five years!

Back-to-school season looks different for every family. 📚💛

Through ASK’s partnership with The Brain Bodega, LLC, ASK kids across Virginia can connect online with an academic mentor to get help with their schoolwork, study skills, and other areas, no matter where they are when learning. Erika, an ASK Young Adult Cancer Survivor (YACS) and founder of The Brain Bodega, takes a holistic approach based on her experience as a childhood cancer survivor.

This year, summer fun stretched out a little longer! ☀️💛

Our ASK kids and their siblings in Richmond enjoyed FOUR wonderful weeks at Summer Camp, filled with new experiences, lots of laughter, and plenty of camp-tastic memories. From science experiments and line dancing to visits from furry animal friends, there was always something new to discover!

But the best part of Summer Camp is giving ASK kids and siblings a place to be themselves and simply be kids.

Thanks for a great summer!
