Thank you to everyone that made our anniversary celebration a success. Out many members and volunteers worked themselves to exhaustion to bring everything together, including our silent auction fundraiser. Thanks to Rev. Watanabe from Honomu Henjoji Temple, Hawaii, for celebrating with us and addressing the local members today.

For those coming to the temple for today’s festivities, please keep in mind that we sit at one of the most frustrating intersections in Portland, due to then train that often stops blocking the intersection for 20-40 minutes at a time. Please consider coming though downtown to cross the river or going up to 21st from the Ross Island Bridge to avoid our unpredictable iron dragon that likes to obstruct traffic. Thank you!

Our 75th Anniversary Celebration is This Weekend!
Saturday and Sunday – October 10 & 11
Please join us in celebrating the Henjyoji Shingon Buddhist Temple's 75th Anniversary on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11.

The temple’s 75th anniversary milestone commemorates the Portland Japanese American Shingon Buddhist community's faith and resilience, which endured through unjust incarceration during WWII, and carries into the 21st century.

Please mark your calendars for this historical event. We humbly ask you to join us in preserving such a profound legacy. Together, as a Buddhist community, we all continue the spiritual transmission of Kobo Daishi (Kukai, 774 to 835), the founder of the Shingon School of Japanese Buddhism.

We look forward to celebrating this meaningful occasion with you.

10 a.m.: Opening ceremony and meditation.

Noon to 2 p.m.: Light snacks, social time. Browse auction and sale items to support the temple.

SHO Restaurant at 10100 SW Barbur Blvd. Portland 97219

3 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Dinner. Fixed price dinner with choice of entree for $50 (contact us if you'd like to attend)

Reedwood Friends Hall at 2901 SE Steele St. Portland 97202

6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.: Buddhist Dharma Talk and Taiko/ Shamisen Performance from Takohachi Taiko.


Sunday, Oct. 11
Henjyoji Shingon Buddhist Temple at 2634 SE 12th Ave. Portland 97202

Noon: Clark Zenkyu Watanabe Sensei (head minister at the Honomu Henjoji Mission) and Kosho Finch Sensei (head minister at the Henjyoji Shingon Buddhist Temple) will lead a commemoration service.

1:30 p.m.: Temple open house.
Auction and Sale conclusion.
Light food and drink.
