Start with getting a 504 PLAN - Governed by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the plan is a legally binding blueprint designed to provide students with disabilities EQUAL access to a public school education by implementing specific classroom accommodations and supports.
Core Eligibility: A student must meet specific legal criteria evaluated by a school team.
- Physical or mental impairment: e.g., ADHD, anxiety, asthma, diabetes, food allergies.
- Substantial limitation: The condition must significantly restrict one or more “major life activities”.
- Impacted activities: Covered activities include learning, concentrating, thinking, reading, breathing, walking, or sleeping.
A 504 plan changes HOW a student learns, not WHAT they learn. Plans do not alter the curriculum or academic expectations. Testing adjustments: Extended time, reduced-distraction environments, or frequent breaks.
- Environment changes: Strategic seating near the teacher or access to a private restroom.
- Instructional aids: Standardized lesson outlines, audiobooks, or peer note-takers.
- Medical protocols: Approved schedules for taking medication or specific emergency health plans.
