A Finnish connection to America’s founding. As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, learn the story of John Morton, the Pennsylvania delegate of Finnish descent whose vote helped break his delegation’s deadlock in favor of independence.

Finlandia Foundation National’s 2026 Lecturer of the Year, John “Jay” E. Smith III, will trace Morton’s family story from the Forest Finns and the colony of New Sweden to Independence Hall, uncovering a lesser-known chapter of Finnish-American history.
