The Peer Company

The Peer Company Our Vision: MHAAO is committed to promoting self-directed recovery and wellness for all individuals. We honor lived experiences.

The Peer Company (formerly Mental Health and Addiction Association of Oregon) is an inclusive peer-run organization dedicated to self-direction honoring the voice of lived experience. We support people wherever they are on their journey, free from judgment, or agenda. We support these aims through education, advocacy, recovery peer services, training, technical assistance, community collaboration, and through developing the peer workforce and leadership.

This event brings together community, creativity, and recovery—and Portland’s artists are at the heart of it. We’re especially looking for artists whose work explores mental health, healing, and the recovery journey, though all Portland-area artists are welcome to submit.

Whether you paint, sculpt, illustrate, photograph, or create in ways we haven’t thought of yet—if your art tells a story about the human experience, we want to hear from you.

✦ All mediums welcome
✦ Priority consideration for work touching on mental health & recovery
✦ Art that builds connection and supports a good cause

This one’s for the people who show up for everyone else. 💚

If you work in peer recovery, you know what it means to hold space: for someone’s hardest moments, their breakthroughs, their setbacks, their hope. That’s sacred work. And it asks a lot of you.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re turning the check-in around!

Swipe through and take a moment—not for your caseload, not for your next shift—just for you. 👉

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Your mental health isn’t separate from the work. It IS the work.

We see you! We’re grateful for you! Take care of you!

Big things are happening for behavioral health in Oregon!

Our Executive Director, Janie Gullickson, was at the Capitol on May 7 as Governor Tina Kotek signed five new laws to strengthen the behavioral health workforce, protect young people from harmful AI, and cut the red tape keeping providers from the people who need them.

As a member of the Behavioral Health Talent Council, Janie has been part of the work that made two of these bills possible: HB 4083, Cutting Red Tape for Behavioral Health Workers, is a direct result of the Council’s recommendations, and Janie spoke at the signing event about HB 4115, Streamlining Background Checks for Behavioral Health Workers, sharing her own experience navigating a system that too often treats lived experience as a liability instead of an asset.

📋 The bills:
•HB 4083 – Cutting Red Tape for Behavioral Health Workers
•HB 4115 – Background Check Streamlining for Behavioral Health Workers
•HB 4069 – Behavioral Health Worker Safety
•SB 1547 – Ballmer Institute Behavioral Health Credential
•SB 1546 – AI Chatbot Safeguards for Youth Mental Health

Grateful to be at the table and ready to keep going!💚💜

A massive thank you to our incredible emcee, Alex Green Sr.! 🙌✨

Alex brought so much more than a mic to Peerpocalypse, he brought lived experience, genuine heart, and the kind of energy that makes a room come alive. As a person in recovery and a former running back for the Green Bay Packers, Alex knows what it means to push through, get back up, and show up fully—and that’s exactly what he did for our community!

The smiles in every photo say it all. Whether he was on stage hyping the crowd or taking pictures with attendees, Alex lit up every corner of this conference. Recovery is better together, and having folks like Alex in the room reminds us why lived experience is one of the most powerful forces in this movement. 💚

Thank you, Alex, you made Peerpocalypse unforgettable!

*(Caption written with love by a Chicago Bears fan who, despite everything, would have to admit Alex made even a Packers jersey look good. Almost. 🐻⬇️🧀)*
