With 33 years in the life insurance industry, you gain wisdom and truths that are truly invaluable.

A massive thank you to Reggie Guyton for joining us as a guest speaker for “Protecting The Keys You Pass Down,” part of our ongoing series on Paving the Way for Black Homeownership.

Culturally, we have historically struggled to have open conversations about life insurance. Reggie made the topic plain, relatable, and—most importantly—actionable.

Thank you, Reggie, for pouring into our community and sharing your wealth of knowledge!

It’s not often you get to bring two leaders in homeownership together for a transparent, heart-to-heart conversation — the kind you’d have around an old school kitchen table. We talked candidly about our approach to homeownership, how we spend money as a community, and took a close-up look at the community land trust model.

Thank you to Dominique Merriweather, Executive Director of Proud Ground, and Dana Fuller Shepard, Executive Director of Arrive (formerly Portland Housing Center), for joining the Paving the Way for Black Homeownership stage during our first Red Table Talk session, “The Keys We Pass Down.”

If you were in the room, you heard truths and options that AI and Google simply can’t give you.

“’The Keys We Pass Down’ was created to remind our community that buying a home is about more than just getting the keys — it’s about the knowledge, preparation, and mindset that come with it,” said Qualen Carter, President of Oregon Realtist. “One of my favorite moments came from Dana Fuller, who put it perfectly: ‘Life prepares you for homeownership.’”

Grateful for leaders like Dominique and Dana, who are doing the real work of expanding access to homeownership here in Oregon.

The people we serve 💙💛

Thank you to every attendee who showed up and participated in Paving The Way for Black Homeownership! Every question asked and story shared brought our vision to life.

Our vision for 2026’s Paving The Way for Black Homeownership was to create a dynamic learning space that would speak meaningfully to the first-time homebuyer, the current homeowner protecting what they’ve built, or the family thinking generations ahead.

“I’m excited by the hunger and aspiration of the community members who came out,” said Oregon Realtist President Qualen Carter. “Their willingness to lean in, show up, and take action to change their lives was everything I prayed for with Paving the Way. The event is nothing without the people — the people who filled the room made the day special.”

Dr. Tony Kelly — Founding President of Oregon Realtist NAREB, now serving as President of Oregon REALTORS® — shares the vision behind our mission: creating real impact in Black homeownership.

𝐏𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 is that vision in motion.

Dr. Kelly’s message is simple: 𝐉𝐔𝐌𝐏 𝐈𝐍! Oregon Realtist will help you on your path to homeownership, right where you’re at.

Since 1947, NAREB has stood on one belief: Democracy in Housing.

Today, that mission feels more urgent than ever. Black homeownership in the U.S. has fallen to 44.7%, the lowest since the Fair Housing Act was passed. Here in Oregon, it’s even lower — 37%.

Numbers like these don’t change on their own. They change when communities know their power — and that starts with knowing who represents you.

We want to thank Representative Travis Nelson and Representative Lamar Wise for joining us at Paving The Way for Black Homeownership and sharing words of encouragement. Thank you for standing with Oregon Realtist in the work of breaking down barriers to homeownership — through education, through financial empowerment, and through reminding all of us that civic participation matters. Making sure we vote. Making sure our registration is current. Making sure we know our elected officials are accessible, approachable, and accountable to us.
