StoveTeam International

StoveTeam International A gift to StoveTeam transforms kitchens from places of sickness into places of sustenance, where families can come together safely for years to come.

StoveTeam International's mission is to partner with local communities to deliver and sustain clean cookstove solutions that improve health, protect the environmnet, and ignite lasting change. Each $50 Ecocina or $100 Justa cookstove saves an average family of almost 8 people from the dangers of smoke. Each stove also helps an entrepreneur in Latin America to grow their business, supports a local

economy and provides jobs where they are needed most. Each Justa cookstove also prevents up to 15 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, equivalent to the average American’s entire yearly carbon footprint.

A scene from Totonicapán, Guatemala.

On the hillside behind the house, laundry is washed while stacks of firewood are stored for the cooking fire.

In this rural region, the Justa stove is more than a place to cook; it is a central part of the home, bringing warmth, food, family, and daily life together. By using less wood, the Justa Cookstove also means less time spent gathering and carrying firewood, giving families more time for work, family, education, and the things that matter most.

For families in Guatemala, making tortillas is an everyday activity. Tortillas accompany nearly every meal, making tortilla preparation an essential part of daily life.

For thousands of mothers in Guatemala, preparing tortillas means working directly over a hot, exposed flame like this one. Burns are common. By reducing their exposure to an open flame, mothers can cook more comfortably and enjoy having their children nearby while they cook. The Justa Cookstove helps mothers cook tortillas faster, more safely, and with greater peace of mind. Learn more about our work at https://www.stoveteam.org/

We believe in serving families for the long term and helping communities thrive. Through annual follow-up and maintenance visits, we support families in keeping their Justa Cookstoves working safely and effectively, so they can continue to avoid the dangers of open-fire cooking. By investing in lasting solutions and ongoing support, we help create safer, healthier homes today while building a healthier future for generations to come. Help us continue to serve families in need across Central America, https://www.stoveteam.org/donate.

Four years ago, StoveTeam became an established NGO in Guatemala. 🇬🇹

What began with nearly two years of persistence, patience, and learning has grown into four years of change, challenges, growth, and meaningful connections.

In this reflection, Country Director Waleska Santos shares what these four years have taught her about being part of StoveTeam’s journey in Guatemala, leading alongside a dedicated team, and continuing to believe in what’s possible.

Here’s to everyone who has been part of our story—and to everything still to come. 🥂

We recently hosted a stove demonstration in the town of El Porvenir, Retalhuleu. Families from the community gathered to try out our demonstration stove and put it to the test by preparing fresh tortillas. Our demonstrations are a wonderful opportunity for community members to experience the stove firsthand and see how it can support their everyday cooking needs. We would like to introduce you to our newest member of our U.S team, Kim Lomax. Kim is our Finance & Operations Administrator and has jumped right into our organization.

Kim has over a decade of financial oversight, project management, and business operations experience gained from launching and running a small family business, yet her heart has always remained committed to improving the lives of women and children, especially in rural communities. Kim started her career as a nonprofit fundraiser and more recently has worked and volunteered for three international organizations addressing obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth injury affecting women in low-resource settings. StoveTeam International's work at the intersection of public health equity, sustainability, and climate change mitigation is a natural fit, and Kim is committed to amplifying its impact in rural communities in Central America.

Kim holds a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in international public program management from Portland State University and a BA in English from the University of Delaware. Outside of work, she can be found hiking the trails of the Pacific Northwest or training for her next triathlon.

This month we say goodbye to our Business Manager, Tina Talbot, as she heads into retirement, but we are so thankful for her work and the time she has spent with us.

When Tina Talbot joined StoveTeam as our part-time Business Manager in early 2023, it was a pivotal moment for the organization. We had just registered StoveTeam as an NGO in Guatemala, were implementing Salesforce to better manage our programs and donors, and were improving the accounting and operational systems needed to support our growing international team. Tina brought exactly the experience and professionalism we needed. Together with our incredible team, Tina helped transform StoveTeam into a stronger, more organized, more professional organization. We are deeply grateful for her wisdom, diplomacy, humor, and unwavering dedication to our mission.

Tina, thank you for everything you have given to StoveTeam - we will miss you and wish you a joyful and well-deserved retirement.

From stove demonstrations and material distribution to in-home construction, we engage families throughout the process, encouraging them to learn about the stove, how it works, and how it is built. Hands-on experience helps families gain a deeper understanding of their stove and how it works, and fosters greater ownership and confidence.
