We are thrilled to feature the work of Yelena Zhavoronkova in our current exhibition “From The Ashes.” Yelena Zhavoronkova is a San Francisco-based Fine Art Photographer and Graphic Designer. She works in project-based series, which allows her to explore the full spectrum of experience: the pains of life, the complicated nature of relationships, and a persistent hope for the future. Her work is simultaneously personal and universal, aiming to speak to viewers on an intimate, familiar level. She is an active member of the photography community, showing her work in multiple exhibitions and collaborating with a supportive network of fellow photographers. These groups are immensely helpful, providing the creative exchange and everyday support that keep her inspired to move toward.

Come and see the show this Saturday, October 10th from 5-8pm for a closing reception!

We are delighted to feature the work of Tony Bellaver in our current exhibition “From The Ashes.” Tony Bellaver is a Bay Area photographer and mixed media artist specializing in experimental photographic techniques. Between 1985 and 1986, Bellaver served as a darkroom assistant at the Ansel Adams works shops in Yosemite for Charles Crammer who taught Cibachrome printing and dye transfer printing, before receiving his undergraduate degree at San Jose State University, and graduate degree at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). While in graduate school, Bellaver expanded his vision of art, focusing on work that incorporated photographic elements using alternative photographic processes.

Make tintypes in our new lighting studio!

This one-day workshop happening on October 25th will take place in our new lighting studio at Halide and is geared toward photographers who have prior knowledge of the basic principles of wet-plate collodion and large format photography. It will provide further experience in lighting and posing for wet-plate collodion portraiture and in taking self-portraits using the wet plate collodion process. We will use both strobes and continuous lighting, and we will experiment with multiple and long exposures. Backdrops and some props will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring costumes, props, and accessories that would add to the fun day of photographing with this Victorian medium. Equipment and chemistry will be provided by The Halide Project.

The workshop will be taught by Judit German-Heins who was featured in our spring exhibition SITE : BODY.

We are very excited to feature the work of Laurie Beck Peterson in our current exhibition “From The Ashes.” Laurie’s work examines how light, time, and natural systems shape one another, revealing cycles of growth, loss, and transformation. Using plant-based and alternative photographic processes, she collaborates with sunlight, water, and organic materials to create images that evolve over time. Each piece becomes a record of interaction as a living surface that reflects our shared connection to the changing environment.

Come see Laurie’s work in the show through October 18th by emailing [email protected] to schedule a visit. Or register for our virtual reception on September 21st where you will hear from all the featured artists.

Laurie is also teaching a workshop, Cyanotype on Wood, on September 26th where students will explore the unique process of creating cyanotype prints on wood surfaces.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION!

The landscape is ever changing. Whether at the scale of geologic or human time, our planet is in constant flux and climate change is causing natural disruptions that are more frequent and catastrophic in scope.

Our upcoming exhibition, “From the Ashes,” features four artists, Laurie Beck Peterson Laurie Beck Peterson Tony Bellaver Tony Bellaver Kari Varner Kari Varner and Yelena Zhavoronkova Yelena Zhavoronkova creating work in response to the changes they observe as a way to process the emotions that are associated with the loss of natural habitats.

Each artist utilizes historic and alternative process photography to explore both personal and political relationships with landscapes being impacted and transformed by a variety of causes. Using destruction as their starting point, they create something new out of the literal and proverbial ashes of what was.

The exhibition will be on view starting September 5th through October 18th. Please join us on September 11th for an opening reception from 5-8pm.
