The Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia and Interfaith Philadelphia mourn the loss of Bishop Patricia Davenport, former bishop of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA.

Bishop Pat was a valued member and committed partner of the Religious Leaders Council, bringing her wisdom, pastoral spirit, prophetic witness, and leadership into relationship with the many faith traditions of our region.

Through her partnership with Interfaith Philadelphia, she demonstrated that religious difference need not keep us distant, but can call us more deeply into dialogue, relationship, service, mutual understanding, and shared responsibility for the well-being of our neighbors.

We give thanks for her life, her faithful presence, and the many ways she stood beside people and communities. May her memory be a blessing.

The Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia and Interfaith Philadelphia attended an interfaith unity press conference on Wednesday to stand with Philadelphia's Muslim community, condemning the recent arson at the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center.

The gathering brought together Muslim, Jewish, Christian, and other religious leaders alongside city and state officials, civil rights organizations, and neighborhood residents.

One of the strongest moments came simply by looking around. More than 100 people stood together outside a damaged mosque representing many religious traditions, public offices, and community organizations.

The gathering, made possible because of relationships built over time, reminded us of the importance of standing in solidarity with our diverse neighbors.

What an extraordinary honor and historic moment for members of our Board and Religious Leaders Council to play a leading role in the Liberty Medal Ceremony honoring His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the National Constitution Center.

Their presence, as religious and civic leaders from across our region, reflected something our world needs now more than ever: a shared commitment to religious liberty, freedom of conscience, and building a society where people of different faiths and convictions can live together with mutual respect and dignity.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was seeing the remarkable diversity of those gathered in one place. It was a quiet but powerful reminder that our differences don't have to become divisions—and that authentic relationships across communities make us all stronger.

During his acceptance remarks, Pope Leo XIV shared these words:

"In order for a nation to flourish, it must be truly united; united not by goals bound to momentary endeavors, but by ideals that do not fade with the passing of time."

His message reminds us that fostering understanding and trust across religious and civic life isn't just for special occasions—it's an ongoing responsibility. We're proud to continue strengthening relationships that make Greater Philadelphia more welcoming, more resilient, and better equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.

We are proud to join this historic moment in Philadelphia as our nation prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary.

The Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia was founded in 2006 to build relationships of mutual support, offer a moral and spiritual voice in the region, and identify issues of local concern for dialogue and action. Senior leaders from thirty-five diverse religious traditions make up the Council, representing more than two million people from across the greater Philadelphia region.
