Meet the incredible instructors who make our summers so unforgettable!

Miss Noora Al-Rawi is returning to the Al-Bustan family for her second amazing year! Many of our camp families already know her for her deep passion and dedication to teaching the Arabic language. But this summer, again, she is also bringing her incredible culinary talents to the camp as our Teen Cooking Class instructor!

Miss Noora is a talented self-taught cook who inherited her love for traditional cooking and family recipes from her mother. She brings a beautiful blend of cultural heritage, storytelling, and flavor to everything she does—skills she loves sharing with her community and on social media.

Whether your teen is learning a new recipe with her for the first time or returning to connect with cultural traditions, learning from Miss Noora is an experience they won't want to miss!

Help us welcome her back in the comments!

Al-Bustan Summer Camp is just around the corner!

As we count down the days to camp, it’s time to start meeting the incredible instructors who make our summers so unforgettable!

Mr. Hafez has been a beloved part of the Al-Bustan family for a very long time. For years, he has brought his incredible energy, mastery of Arab percussion, and passion for teaching to our campers. He is a pillar of our programs, and so many of our returning families already know and love him for the rhythm, joy, and cultural heritage he brings to the classroom every single day.

Whether your child is drum-rolling with him for the first time or returning for another amazing year, learning from Mr. Hafez is an experience they won't want to miss!

Help us welcome him back in the comments!

When pop singer Sabrina Carpenter apologized for mocking a ululating fan at her April 10 Coachella performance, many Arab Americans saw more than a celebrity misunderstanding. The moment ignited a broader conversation about a centuries-old vocal tradition rooted in joy, celebration, womanhood and resistance.
During her headlining set at Coachella, Carpenter paused after hearing a fan perform a zaghrouta (زغروطة), also known as a zaghareet (زغاريط), from the audience. “I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it,” she said onstage. The fan replied, “It’s my culture,” and Carpenter continued: “That’s your culture, is yodeling? Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”

The following day, Carpenter issued a public apology on X, stating her reaction was “pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill-intended.” For many in the Arab diaspora, however, the exchange became a gateway into a broader discussion about a sound deeply woven into everyday life across the Middle East and North Africa.

BOOK OF THE WEEK: *My Egyptian Grandma’s Kitchen by Magda Mehdawy✨

There is something incredibly sacred about the stories passed down through generations—especially the ones told through the aroma of simmering garlic, coriander, and perfectly seasoned Hawawshi 🤤

This week, we are celebrating the rich culinary heritage, warmth, and love found in *My Egyptian Grandma’s Kitchen*. It’s more than a collection of recipes; it’s a love letter to tradition, family, and the comfort of home cooking.

Come pull up a chair! Flip through the pages, find inspiration for your next family meal, and spend some peaceful afternoon hours immersed in culture and art here at the gallery. We’d love to have you!
