Anthony Wright (W’26) shares his experience taking MGMT 3530: Wharton Field Challenge, an Academically Based Community Service (ABCS) course in which University of Pennsylvania students teach financial literacy concepts to West Philadelphia middle- and high-school students: https://whr.tn/4g845Ni

Taught by Prof. Keith Weigelt, MGMT 3530 prepares Penn students to volunteer in local schools by equipping them with teaching techniques, classroom leadership strategies, and financial literacy education. They then apply these skills while working one-on-one with students in local middle and high schools.

Offered through the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at Penn, ABCS courses like MGMT 3530 connect faculty and students with West Philadelphia organizations to help solve critical campus and community problems, including environmental, health, arts, and education issues.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, more than 110 Americans are killed by guns every day. In Philadelphia, gun violence continues to be a major concern and has disproportionately affected underserved communities of color. In 2022, Philadelphia experienced 514 homicides, surpassing a city record for annual homicides for the second year in a row dating back to at least 1960, according to the City Controller's Office.

Two key contributors that fuel gun violence are poverty and unemployment. As part of the Philadelphia Eagles' ongoing efforts to expand upon its campaign and to help combat the crisis in Philadelphia, the team has announced a fully integrated approach to breaking the cycles of poverty and violence."

Such an honor to have the Birds in our corner for another year! Tackling this crisis as a community, through education and opportunity.
