I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inform you of a significant change in my professional journey. As you may already know, I have been a part of the Girls Rock Philly (GRP) family for some time now, and it is with a heavy heart that I share the news of my layoff from the organization.

This decision has deeply affected me for several reasons. Firstly, the connections we have built with the youth, families, and organizations who consider GRP a friend, safe haven, confidante, or collaborator weigh heavily on my mind. Their trust and support have been the cornerstone of our work, and it saddens me to think of the impact this transition may have on them.

Secondly, reflecting on the 16 years of dedicated service GRP has provided to our community fills me with immense pride. Witnessing the positive transformation in countless lives over the years has been truly rewarding, and it pains me to see this chapter come to a temporary close.

On a more personal note, the uncertainty surrounding my own financial well-being adds another layer of concern. Like many others, I am navigating the challenges that accompany sudden changes in employment status, and it is a source of considerable stress.

However, above all else, my thoughts are consumed by the children we serve at GRP. Their energy, enthusiasm, and unwavering spirit have been a constant source of inspiration throughout my tenure. Their well-being and continued access to the resources and support GRP provides weigh heavily on my mind as I navigate this transition.

Despite the somber reality of the “hiatus” status GRP currently faces, I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such a remarkable organization. Working full-time in a nonprofit setting for the first time has been both challenging and rewarding. The moments of joy and fulfillment derived from serving our youth have made every hardship worthwhile.

GRP's history, present, and future is rooted in using art and music to address issues of social justice, both locally and globally. Our hearts are breaking at the horrific escalation of violence in Gaza, which follows a nearly 80 year modern history of displacement, colonization, and dehumanization of a marginalized indigenous population's civilians. The Palestinian people of Gaza and the West Bank are being targeted for state sanctioned, militarized violence as a vengeance filled response to the deadly Hamas attack and ongoing hostage situation that has targeted and taken Israeli civilians' lives. Palestinians who have long been denied water, medical care, and supplies are now being killed indiscriminately and forced to leave their ancestral homes.

As a youth organization that fights for justice here in Philly, we see parallels between oppression at home and the plight of Palestinians, half of whom are under the age of 18. We stand on the side of history that seeks an immediate end to state-sanctioned violence against Palestinians and freedom, safety, and human rights for Palestinians and all peoples. GRP stands with our Palestinian and Jewish communities in Philly who are grieving the loss of loved ones and denounces islamophobia, xenophobia, and anti-semitism at home and abroad. All Power to the People, all the time.
