The Chestnut Hill Community Association’s featured Passport Partners for August are our Chestnut Hill bookstores!
In just the last five years, these independent bookstores, and the readers who love them, have helped turn Chestnut Hill into one of Philadelphia’s preeminent literary hubs.

2021 was a big year for Chestnut Hill book lovers. After over a decade in which there were no bookshops in Chestnut Hill, 2021 saw the opening of both Booked and Hilltop Books, offering the community not just a wide selection of new and used books, respectively, but also public readings, author signings, and other literary events.

While two bookstores in one neighborhood might be enough to make any bookworm’s heart sing, things got even more exciting with the opening of Multiverse in 2023. With a focus on comics and genre fiction and a dedication to celebrating diverse voices and stories, Multiverse carved out a home in Chestnut Hill for comic book, fantasy, and sci-fi fans of all stripes.

Finally, after years of operation as an online retailer, 50 Watts opened their brick-and-mortar shop in Chestnut Hill in 2024, offering one of the most diverse and expertly curated selection of books in the city. From art books to foreign imports to locally produced zines and small-press releases, 50 Watts offers exciting finds for every kind of reader.

In addition to making Chestnut Hill a premier destination on the Philadelphia Book Crawl –held this year on Saturday, August 22nd— our Chestnut Hill bookstores have fostered a thriving literary community congregating at literary events, and at the Silent Book Club, which meets every Tuesday evening in August in Pastorius Park and is proudly co-sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association. In just five years, our Chestnut Hill bookstores have created something magical and have given readers from all over the city a neighborhood they can call home.

At the Chestnut Hill Community Association (CHCA), we are dedicated to improving the quality of life and encouraging a sense of community in Chestnut Hill.

The CHCA has 3 areas of focus:
1. Service - Particularly to our growing membership of 1,300+ households
2. Advocacy - Provide a forum that allows residents and developers to meet and discuss imminent zoning and variance concerns
3. Community - We offer community events, including the longest running outdoor concert series in Philadelphia, an outdoor movie series, holiday parade, and more.
