On Saturday, JASNA President Mary Mintz entertained and informed the Region with her insightful talk on how 19th century American magazines characterized Jane Austen. We are very grateful for her visit. The program was dedicated to the memory of our beloved friend and Region board member Maggie Sullivan who passed in August.

Mary Mintz has been the President of the Jane Austen Society of North America since 2022. After a forty-year professional career, she retired as the Associate Director for Outreach at the American University Library in Washington, D.C., as well as the Humanities and Honors Librarian. Mary has served JASNA nationally as the chair of the Nominating Committee, as an at-large-member of the Board of Directors, and as vice-president/president-elect. Before her national roles, Mary served as Regional Coordinator of the DC Metropolitan Region. Mary holds two master’s degrees, in library science and in English literature with a specialization in nineteenth century British literature.

As President of JASNA, Mary oversees the day-to-day operations and strategic focus of the organization. Under her leadership, JASNA has experienced unprecedented growth and vitality fueled by free memberships for students and JASNA’s outstanding year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth.

This program is dedicated to the memory of our beloved friend, author, and fellow Janeite, Maggie Sullivan.

The historic Smyrna Opera House in Smyrna, Delaware has extended a warm invitation to its “Readings and Luncheon with Jane Austen” on May 2, Saturday, at 1 p.m.

According to the sponsors, "This will an enchanting event where guests are invited to arrive in Regency period dress, if they wish, and enjoy a delicious luncheon and Negus (spiked punch), while listening to readings from four of Jane Austen’s novels and hearing live piano music Jane Austen might have chosen to play, herself."

We had a great time yesterday celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday with a delicious luncheon and a very special guest: the birthday girl herself! Miss Jane Austen regaled us with stories of her life, but could not be coaxed into telling us the planned ending to Sanditon. Thanks to all who joined us for a memorable afternoon on a snowy day.
