Today in 1835, P.T. Barnum started touring with his first circus (soon to become Barnum & Bailey), featuring animal acts including "Jumbo" the elephant. After years of sustained vegan protests, the animal-based circus company finally shut down in 2017. In 2022 it announced a relaunch as an animal-free circus.
