Gift of Life joined donation professionals from across the country at the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation Conference, sharing insights on decreasing barriers to donation and life-saving organ transplants in communities of color.

Media Relations Coordinator and AMAT PR Committee Co-chair Kendall Bunch shared her expertise during New Attendee Orientation. Multicultural Affairs Specialist Naja Killebrew and Gift of Life Institute Instructional Designer RJ Tischler connected with peers and exchanged best practices in community outreach, education and physician training.

This year’s theme, “Igniting Hope: Uniting Voices for a Stronger Donation and Transplantation Future,” reflects the work we’re committed to every day: listening to diverse communities, building trust and increasing awareness so we can eliminate the transplant waitlist.

Tim Mabin never gave up hope thanks to his faith, receiving a life-saving transplant. He hopes his story inspires others to sign up to save lives.

For four years, Tim underwent regular dialysis treatments, relying on the support of family and friends. “I had a community praying for me and thinking of me,” Tim recalled. “That’s what kept me going.”

In 2021, Tim received his new kidney and pancreas at Jefferson Health – Einstein and started sharing his story everywhere, from churches to neighborhood events. “We needed a voice for Black and Brown communities,” Tim said. Communities of color are disproportionately affected by chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

The recent death of a friend, who was on the transplant waitlist, was a sobering reminder about the importance of his advocacy. “It’s more than a transplant,” Tim said. “We have loved ones we want to live for.”

At just 1 month old, Ariana began peritoneal dialysis at home as she waited for a life-saving transplant. She received the extraordinary gifts of a healthy kidney and liver at Nemours more than four years later.

Since then, Ariana has continued to grow and thrive. She celebrated the fifth anniversary of her double transplant this year, enjoyed time with fellow transplant recipients and their siblings at Gift of Life's Camp Jeremy, and proudly competed in the 2026 Transplant Games of America as part of our Team Philadelphia.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate Ariana’s incredible journey and the precious gift of organ donation that made her future possible. According to the National Kidney Foundation and American Liver Foundation, Hispanic and Latino people are more likely to develop kidney or liver failure. Life-saving partnerships!

Gift of Life is proud to work with our legislative partners to raise awareness for organ donation. Community Relations Supervisor Dwendy Johnson and Gift of Life Volunteer Ambassadors joined tissue recipient PA State Rep. Zach Mako at his Senior Expo earlier this September, where they connected with more than 350 seniors.

We are excited to continue our partnership with Rep. Mako on Monday, Oct. 5. We will be joining him and kidney recipient Senator Lynda Culver at Steps for Life at the Capitol to raise awareness for the importance of organ donation and registration. We invite you to join us at 10 a.m. in the Main Rotunda for a short press conference followed by our walk around the Pennsylvania State Capitol! Gift of Life night on the baseball diamond!

We partnered with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to raise awareness for organ donation. Two-time kidney recipient Tony Harding threw out the first pitch before a recent game, and Community Relations Supervisor Dwendy Johnson shared the life-saving impact of organ donation in a pre-game address.

We handed out organ donor awareness materials and even struck up a friendship with RailRiders mascot Champ.
