Congrats to all students, teachers, and staff of The School District of Philadelphia on a great first week back!

CIS is proud to support nearly 100 individuals who are employed at the District, and we're wrapping up the week with a spotlight on two more, Phyllis and Dylan, who have both found fulfilling jobs at schools in Philadelphia.

Both their stories are neat in their own way--Phyllis found at the District the administrative job she'd always dreamt of, and Dylan is employed by the very same school district he graduated from.

Here are Phyllis and Dylan in their own words. Have a great weekend, everyone ✨

On the third day of christmas…just kidding, though it is a week worth celebrating at CIS, with nearly 100 participants returning to jobs at The School District of Philadelphia!

On this third day of the new school year, we’re spotlighting Rayna and Desmond, both of whom were hired at the District in 2024. Rayna works on the Environmental Team in the Office of Grant Development, while Desmond works on the Dining Services team at a local K-8.

Now in their third year at the District, both have excelled in their respective positions and are eager to take on new tasks and grow in their roles. Check out the pictures to hear what they had to say about their jobs at the District, and head to cisworks.org for more on how CIS works for jobseekers with a disability.

It's Day 2 of the new school year, and we're back with a spotlight on two more amazing individuals who've found a great job and a supportive community at The School District of Philadelphia.

Meet Rymair and Isabella. Rymair was hired in a full-time position last April at the very same high school he attended as a student (!), and he's excited to begin his second year of work there.

And Isabella was all smiles when we stopped in to say hello and see how her first week is going. She was hired at a local elementary school two years ago and is looking forward to celebrating her third anniversary at the job come September.

Check out the pictures to hear what each had to say about their jobs, and stay tuned for more on some of the incredible CIS participants returning to work this week at the District.

🎶Oh my god we’re back again…🎶 That’s right—The School District of Philadelphia is back in session!

It’s an exciting day for the hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and staff who will be returning to schools all across the city, and it’s a big day at CIS as well, with nearly 100 CIS-supported individuals returning to work in their jobs at the District.

To celebrate the start of the school year, we’ll spend the week highlighting some of the CIS participants who work at District schools and what they love about their jobs.

We begin today with Drewliana, who works on the support service team at a local elementary, and with Hunter, who’s returning for his third year on the food service team at a south Philly K-8. Give it up for these two SDP veterans who are excited to kick off another year!

Have a great first day back, everyone, and keep an eye on our page for more spotlights on the many CIS participants who’ve found a great job and a great community at the School District of Philadelphia.

Class is back in session on Monday at the School District of Philadelphia, and Avory’s been working hard all week getting a West Philadelphia elementary ready for returning students!

As he organized the cafeteria and set up classrooms, he talked about his excitement for the new year. He’s been working at the school since last January, and told us the summer has felt like the offseason might to a baseball player: all training in preparation for the real thing.

As we chatted with him, our voices echoed through the empty cafeteria. Next week, it will be filled with joyful students eager to begin their classes and meet new friends, and Avery can’t wait: he’s been a steadfast and helpful presence throughout the summer, assisting with updates to the facilities, but he’s eager to build on the work skills he learned when school was in session.

Come Monday, he’ll have an even broader range of responsibilities than he did last year, from operating the Point of Sale system in the cafeteria to overseeing deliveries of food and school supplies and getting everything to its rightful place.

We are so proud of Avory for the great job he’s done at work, and we’re as excited as he is to see him begin his second year as an employee of the School District of Philadelphia.

Rush returning to Philly is a big-time event (big ups on their Rocky-themed promo poster!), and Tyree and Sherleen are meeting the moment at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The two of them work for Aramark at Xfinity, and both were on hand four full days before this Friday’s concert to help get the stadium ready for the show.

While Rush will be Friday’s main event, Tyree and Sherleen are stars in their own right. Both have stood out to their managers and co-workers for their work ethic and their can-do attitude, and they’re constant fixtures on the team that gets the stadium ready for its ever-changing roster of events throughout the year, from Flyers and Sixers games to Monster Truck rallies, and everything in between.

Even sweeter? August marks the two-year anniversary of each being hired by Aramark, where they’ve found a supportive community and jobs that they enjoy.

Congrats to these two on two years at Aramark, and for their great work this week getting the stadium ready for Rush!

Give it up for Kevin, who just began a 12 week paid internship at one of the coolest sites we can think of: Temple University's TechOWL Community Space (Tech OWL - Technology for Our Whole Lives), an interactive resource hub for Pennsylvanians with disabilities with an emphasis on assistive technology.

Kevin started just last week, and his head’s been on a swivel ever since. Accessible video gaming, 3D printing, wheelchair maintenance, tech tools to assist people with disabilities on whatever project they’re at work on—TechOWL truly has it all, and Kevin couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it.

As an intern, he’s getting a valuable window into a first-rate community space as well as firsthand experience in all aspects of its operations. He shared with us that he’s learned a ton in just a week there, and he’s still got 11 more to go!

A big thank you to the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for providing funding support for Kevin’s internship, and to CIS’s own Kierra Best, who shared this pic from Kevin’s first week.

Don’t worry, it is most definitely still summer, but we couldn’t help feeling a jolt of excitement for autumn while watching Nicholas unbox those Drexel sweatshirts in his job at Rally House at Drexel University (Drexel University Store).

Nicholas’s path to employment at Rally House is something of a Legend of the Fall in itself: As a ’25-’26 Project SEARCH at Drexel participant, Nicholas interned at Rally House and got important work experience learning all facets of the store’s operations. When he graduated from the program in June, he was offered employment at the very store where he interned, a testament to how much he impressed the store’s managers during his work experience there.

Nicholas has been working at Rally House since the start of summer, and he’s doing an amazing job. When we checked in with him this week he said he’s having fun, learning a ton, and that he’ll be ready for the spotlight when Drexel University students return to campus in just over a month.

Congratulations to Nicholas on turning his internship into his first official job—keep up the great work!

Hit that like button for Dan, who’s known for going wa-wa-way above and beyond in his job at Wawa.

Dan’s affectionately known around the store as “Dan the Man” (it’s even printed on his official nametag!), and we couldn’t be prouder for the awesome job he’s doing at work.

Dan truly does it all, from stocking the coffee station to doing the important back-end work to make sure the store is looking ship-shape for customers. And his hard work and good spirit has made him a hit with customers and co-workers alike.

Join us in congratulating Dan for excelling at work and finding a job he loves among a supportive community of co-workers.

Give it up for this awesome group of students hard at work during their summer internship at DICK'S Sporting Goods!

The internship is part of the students’ Pre-Employment Transition Services through the Delaware Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Over the course of their time at Dick’s, they’re getting firsthand experience across all segments of the store’s operations, from the stockroom to point-of-sale and everything in between.

We’re so proud of this group for the hard work and positive energy they bring each day, and we’re proud to serve them through our School-to-Work transition programs, which help bridge the gap from school to employment for young adults with disabilities.

A big thanks to our program partners at Freire Charter School Wilmington and to CIS’s own Olivia Hawkins: she shared these fantastic pictures with us and has provided outstanding support to these students throughout the summer.
