Baby bonds. That’s what we’re talking about next week on The Government Fix.

What would it mean to give more children a stronger financial foundation before they reach adulthood? And how can government help facilitate that process?

Host Amanda Renteria sits down with David Radcliffe, State and Local Policy Director at The New School and former Policy Director for the Office of Connecticut State Treasurer, to explore why wealth matters alongside income, how Connecticut became the first state to launch a baby bonds program, and what it takes to turn an ambitious policy idea into something that can make a difference in people's lives.

🎙️ Episode 1 arrives September 8.

All good policy begins with an idea. But what does it take to bring that idea to life?

This season on The Government Fix, host Amanda Renteria talks with the people putting ambitious ideas into practice—from helping children build wealth from birth and automatically sealing eligible criminal records to making clean energy accessible. These are the folks innovating. Trying bold ideas. And putting ideas into action.

The conversations go beyond just, “What?” and ask, “How?” How do you build support? How do you turn policy into practice? And how can we learn from solutions already taking shape?

🎙️ The Season 2 trailer is out now, with our first episode arriving September 8.

A government service can be well-designed and easy to use, but if the right stakeholders aren't bought in, it won't ever reach the people it's meant to serve.

That's why our UX team brings stakeholders directly into user testing and co-design sessions with the people who will use our tools, like GetYourRefund and SimpleFile. When skeptics can see the impact for themselves, sustained support tends to follow.

In the comments, tell us about a moment when bringing a stakeholder into the process changed how they saw the work.

We believe filing taxes should be easy, accessible, and free. So should getting the credits your family has earned.

That's the idea behind SimpleFile, the tool we built with New Jersey and Colorado to help families claim benefits like the Child Tax Credit in under 15 minutes.

Creating SimpleFile took thoughtful design decisions, like how to turn a line of tax code into a plain-language question that tax filers can easily understand and answer.

We're sharing a few of the principles we used to make SimpleFile clear, trustworthy, and welcoming for the families who qualify.

In the wake of the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, LA County wanted to evaluate their building and permitting processes to ensure it was easy to navigate.

We partnered with the county to bring together six departments around a shared vision of simplifying the rebuilding process. For the families who lost their homes, this work provided a clearer path forward. It also helped the county build a foundation for responding to future disasters.
