Muso Health Time matters. Faster access to care can save 10x more lives. In the areas where Muso operates, we’ve seen a 10x difference.

Muso is a global health non-profit that is revolutionizing how quickly health workers provide access to care for sick children. A decade ago a small group of Malians and Americans came together to address the injustices of health and poverty they witnessed around them. Working together out of a converted storage closet, they founded "Muso," a non-profit that is revolutionizing how quickly communities access care for sick children. Muso is the word for "woman" in the local Malian Bamanankan language - and Muso has been woman- and community-led from its inception. Muso trains and manages Community Health Workers (CHWs) who walk door to door, often in the blazing sun, finding and treating patients in their homes. Yirimadjo, an urban slum in Mali where Muso began serving one hundred people over a decade ago, has grown to an area of over 150,000 people. And in these communities, the death of a child has become rare. We want to make the change we’ve seen in Yirimadjo the story of our world, and in 2016 the Muso team began the expansion; we now serve over 300,000 people across Mali.

We're proud to stand with Community Health Impact Coalition and partners around the world advancing policies that recognize community health workers as trained, supervised, supported, and fairly compensated professionals.

At Muso, this vision is central to our Rapid Care model. We work alongside the governments of Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, and Zambia to help shape and implement policies that strengthen national community health workforces and expand access to care. Together, we're working toward reaching 20 million people with Rapid Care by 2030.

Muso is thrilled and honored to have been selected as a Solver for Solve - MIT’s 10th Anniversary Challenge and awarded the Philips Foundation's Social Impact Award. The prize honors innovation to address maternal and child health as well as cardiovascular disease, allowing innovators to scale solutions that improve access to healthcare for underserved communities.

Muso received the award at the MIT Solve Challenge Finals, acknowledging how our innovation comes together with ambition and deep understanding of care delivery in our commitment to ending the child mortality crisis.

We are grateful to both MIT Solve and the Philips Foundation for partnering with us on our journey to making child deaths rare everywhere.

Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que le Dr Christian Rusangwa deviendra le prochain Directeur général de Muso à compter du 1er janvier 2027.

Membre de la direction de Muso depuis 2019, Christian a joué un rôle majeur dans le développement de nos partenariats avec les gouvernements en Afrique et dans la mise en œuvre des Soins rapides à grande échelle.

Sa nomination intervient à un moment important pour Muso, alors que plusieurs gouvernements s’engagent à intégrer les Soins rapides dans leurs systèmes nationaux de santé. Nous sommes heureux de pouvoir compter sur Christian pour accompagner Muso dans cette nouvelle phase et poursuivre notre ambition : élargir l’accès précoce aux soins de santé.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Christian Rusangwa will become Muso’s next Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 2027.

A longtime member of the Muso leadership team, Christian has played a key role in building our partnerships with governments across Africa and advancing our work to bring Rapid Care to scale.

His appointment comes at an important moment for Muso, as governments move to integrate Rapid Care into national health systems. We look forward to Christian’s leadership as we work together to turn this momentum into lasting change and expand access to early healthcare.

It started with a conversation in Bamako.

In 2005, Dr. Ari Johnson, Dr. Jessica Beckerman, Dr. Djoumé Diakité, Kadidia Sounfoutéra, Nana Niaré, and Moïse Samaké came together in Yirimadio with a simple but ambitious idea: people should be able to get the right care, at the right time.

That idea became Muso.

What began in one community in Bamako has grown into more than two decades of working alongside communities in Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, and Zambia to advance equitable access to healthcare and ensure that where someone lives does not determine whether they can access quality care.

The story of those early days is now featured in A Matter of Hope: Lessons Learned from Leaders, Changemakers, and Visionaries on Making a Difference in the World, a new book by Jim Bildner and the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation.

A Matter of Hope has been available in libraries since September 8.
