Muso Health

Muso Health Time matters. Faster access to care can save 10x more lives. In the areas where Muso operates, we’ve seen a 10x difference.

Muso is a global health non-profit that is revolutionizing how quickly health workers provide access to care for sick children. A decade ago a small group of Malians and Americans came together to address the injustices of health and poverty they witnessed around them. Working together out of a converted storage closet, they founded "Muso," a non-profit that is revolutionizing how quickly communit

ies access care for sick children. Muso is the word for "woman" in the local Malian Bamanankan language - and Muso has been woman- and community-led from its inception. Muso trains and manages Community Health Workers (CHWs) who walk door to door, often in the blazing sun, finding and treating patients in their homes. Yirimadjo, an urban slum in Mali where Muso began serving one hundred people over a decade ago, has grown to an area of over 150,000 people. And in these communities, the death of a child has become rare. We want to make the change we’ve seen in Yirimadjo the story of our world, and in 2016 the Muso team began the expansion; we now serve over 300,000 people across Mali.

proCHW policy is essential to making professional CHWs the norm worldwide. But policy alone doesn’t tell us whether programs will hold in delivery.

What matters is whether those commitments are backed by the systems required to sustain them—how CHWs are financed, supervised, and integrated into primary care.

In 2023, CHIC launched the proCHW Policy Dashboard to track where policy commitments exist.

Today, we’re launching Version 2.0 to ask a harder question: are national policies being implemented?

The Dashboard is both a scoreboard and a strategy tool for the proCHW movement:
- By detailing existing policies, it maps proCHW investment opportunities.
- By showing where strong policy and implementation are in place, it’s a scoreboard of progress.
- By flagging policies set to expire within the next 24 months, it maps key windows for policy action and renewal.

It is built as a shared resource for the proCHW movement to drive progress toward adoption and implementation of proCHW policies.

A strong health system pays and equips its frontline workforce.

Many countries now have proCHW policies. But policy alone does not tell us whether CHWs are paid, supervised, supplied, or integrated into primary care systems.

To help countries, funders, and advocates better understand where implementation is holding, and where it is not, CHIC is launching Version 2.0 of the proCHW Policy Dashboard on the sidelines of .

The updated dashboard looks beyond policy adoption to show where the foundations for implementation are in place, and where more financing and systems support are still needed.

Because when CHWs are left outside budgets, communities are often left outside care.

For many rural communities, a CHW is the only point of access to care.

So what happens when much of that workforce is underpaid, unpaid, or reliant on donor funding that is rapidly contracting?

A financing gap must confront.

Without sustained domestic financing, proCHW policies risk remaining commitments on paper rather than reliable access to care.

At , delegates will talk about how health systems can deliver more with less.

For community health, the answer cannot be more short-term projects.

Many countries now have proCHW policies. But policy on paper doesn’t always translate into consistent access to care.

Without funding for CHWs written into national budgets, these commitments risk remaining under-implemented and vulnerable to funding shocks.

Our ask is clear: sustained domestic financing for proCHWs, alongside catalytic funding that helps countries move from policy commitments to implementation. Making proCHWs the norm worldwide depends on it.

Muso is honored to announce that its CEO and co-founder, Dr. Ari Johnson, has contributed a chapter to Jim Bildner’s and Draper Richard Kaplan Foundation’s upcoming book, “A Matter of Hope: Lessons Learned from Leaders, Changemakers, and Visionaries on Making a Difference in the World.”

Titled “Nana Intervenes and the World Is Never the Same,” the chapter recounts the early beginnings of Muso in Mali, marked by a pivotal encounter in 2005 in the capital city of Bamako between a group of physicians, obstetricians, nurses, community leaders, and educators united by a shared commitment to ending inequities in access to health care.

This collaboration shaped their shared vision and led to the creation and growth of Muso, grounding its approach in working with communities and co-creating sustainable solutions.

A Matter of Hope will be published on September 8, 2026.

A 90% reduction in zero-dose children: In Mali and Côte d’Ivoire, the vaccination campaign led by Muso in partnership with Focusing Philanthropy, reduced the share of unvaccinated children aged 0–2 from 10% pre-launch in 2023 to less than 1% by December 2025.

Our expanded campaign now continues through 2026, and your support can go even further. Through Focusing Philanthropy’s matching challenge, every $2 donated to Muso unlocks an additional $1, immediately amplifying impact on the ground.

Take action today to protect more children.
