A police officer and a robbery suspect were both shot and left with life-threatening wounds after a vehicle pursuit and a gunfight Sunday.

According to a San Francisco Police Department press release, officers were alerted to a suspect’s vehicle coming into the city via the Bay Bridge. The driver, along with a passenger, fled from officers after an attempted intervention at Mission and First streets, sparking a chase.

The suspect’s vehicle “became disabled” in the vicinity of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue in Bayview. One or both of the people in the vehicle purportedly shot at officers, hitting one officer multiple times. Police returned fire, and the vehicle’s passenger was hit. The driver fled on foot and was subsequently arrested nearby. Officers also recovered two guns.

ShotSpotter data reviewed by Mission Local for the vicinity of Bayshore and Jerrold recorded 19 shots from “high capacity” weapons at about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Both the passenger and an SFPD officer were transported to the hospital and are being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Garry’s List, the dark money political group founded by Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, gave $76,000 to the campaign opposing the “Overpaid CEO tax” in the last two days.

If passed, the measure would increase taxes for companies whose CEO makes more than 100 times what the median worker earns.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Foundation, a longstanding Bay Area charity, gave $50,000 in support of the “Overpaid CEO tax” on Wednesday.

In other news: Two mysterious PACs have started spending big for Chan. Pro-Choice Majority Action and Rising Tide Collective put in $325,000 and $110,000, respectively, for digital ads and text messages to voters late last week.

Who is funding these groups and why they chose to get involved at this late date is unclear — both PACs only started spending in the past two weeks, so they have yet to file any disclosures saying where their funding is coming from.

Philippe Chagniot, a 68-year-old landlord accused of killing his tenant in the Outer Sunset earlier this month, pleaded not guilty Friday to murder, arson and weapons charges in connection with what prosecutors have described as a planned ambush of Eric Bigone.

Chagniot, a retired dentist, appeared in custody in San Francisco Superior Court. His attorney, Michael Cardoza, entered pleas of “not guilty” for all charges, and agreed to postpone the next step in the process, a preliminary hearing, that will require prosecutors to present enough evidence for the case to proceed.

Chagniot will remain in jail for now.

Chagniot is accused of killing 58-year-old Eric Bigone on May 17. In court, the judge read from charging documents, which allege that he killed Bigone with a MAC-10 machine gun after lying in wait for him outside the house Bigone had rented from Chagniot since 2023.

The case is expected to return to court Aug. 24.

Just days from Election Day on June 2, only about 6,600 ballots from District 4 have been returned.

Our last question for the June candidates is: What is one piece of criticism that people often make about you that is not true or unfair?

It was an opportunity to address their perceived weakness in the crowded race. Candidates talked about their age and experience in government, past record in policing and length of residency in the neighborhood.

Exactly one year ago, Kiah Stokes jogged onto the court at Chase Center in a Las Vegas Aces jersey. “I remembered the crowd being so loud,” Stokes said about playing at Ballhalla for the first time. “It was really intense.”

A year later, Stokes is no longer on the other end of it.

She is the Valkyries’ new starting center, coming off a big win against the Indiana Fever and preparing to play against her former team at Chase Center on May 31.

Playing home games at Ballhalla, she said, is one of the reasons she came here. “The fan support was just so great, and it was just so positive. It’s like, every game, they’re selling out 18,000 people. I mean, that’s incredible.”

“She understands what we are building here and what it takes to win,” Valkyries General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin said when the team signed Stokes.

That was especially clear on Monday, when nearly every player on the team — from the starters to the bench — scored in the 97-70 win against the Connecticut Sun.

City supervisors and residents questioned representatives of the San Francisco Police Department Thursday over slow police-response times in District 6, which includes SoMa.

Southern Station’s response times for lower-priority calls were as much as 55 percent slower than the rest of the city over a recent six-month period, according to Mission Local’s analysis.

SFPD officials said that since December 2025, Southern Station has received 20 additional patrol officers for its area, which covers SoMa, the Embarcadero, China Basin, Mission Bay, Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island, bringing staffing from 91 to 111 officers.

Jason Cunningham, a program manager in SFPD’s Strategic Management Bureau, and Deputy Chief Scott Biggs pointed to new technology, including a pilot program that will use drones instead of on-the-ground police officers, to improve response times to calls in District 6.

That did not satisfy some hearing attendees, who said drones and recent staffing increases do not address the scale of the neighborhood’s challenges, including high poverty rates and open-air drug markets near the Sixth Street corridor.

This is the fifth time David Lee has run for office in San Francisco. He has not yet won. He has not yet, to be fair, come close to winning.

Lee, 57, first ran for office in 2012 when he threw his hat in the ring for the District 1 supervisor seat. He did this two more times, in 2016 and 2020. In 2024, he set his sights on the State Assembly, but came second to Catherine Stefani, trailing by some 38,000 votes.

Now a District 4 candidate after moving to the Sunset in September. “Sunset has been my cultural home. It’s where my friends are, it’s where my family is. We have deep connections,” Lee said.

Lee is facing opponents including appointed incumbent Supervisor Alan Wong, who has the mayor’s support and more than $1 million in PAC money backing him, mostly from Lurie’s wealthy allies. Also among the front-runners is Natalie Gee, who is boosted by labor unions.

Although Lee isn’t considered a frontrunner in this June’s District 4 supervisor race, he’s no unknown.

The clock is ticking—and we need your help before the end of May.

Mission Local has expanded to four new neighborhoods—the Tenderloin, Bayview, the Sunset, and the Richmond—and we now have reporters dedicated to each one. That's five neighborhoods getting the kind of careful, community-focused coverage that started right here in the Mission.

To sustain this work, we're trying to raise $125,000 by May 31. And right now, thanks to $50,000 in matching funds, your gift goes twice as far.

Free local news doesn't produce itself. But with your support, it can reach every corner of San Francisco.
