La organización Somos Familia fue fundada en el 2007 por dos mamás del Este de la Bahía (del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco) que tienen hijos gay y bisexuales con el fin de conectarse con otras familias. Somos Familia was founded by two moms from the East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area) with Latino gay and bisexual sons in 2007 to reach out to other families.

For nearly 20 years, Somos Familia has been a place where Latine LGBTQ+ people and their families find acceptance, healing, and community.

Founded in 2007, Somos Familia began with a simple but powerful mission: to ensure that no family had to navigate the journey of supporting an LGBTQ+ loved one alone. As mothers of Latino gay and bisexual sons, we recognized the need for culturally responsive, Spanish-language resources rooted in compassion, understanding, and community.

Today, Somos Familia provides family support groups, youth leadership development, health and wellness programs, educational workshops, retreats, advocacy, and culturally affirming resources that strengthen families and empower LGBTQ+ people to thrive.

Why We’re Asking for Your Support

Like many community-based organizations, Somos Familia has experienced increased financial pressure as funding for LGBTQ+ organizations has become more competitive, even as the need for our services continues to grow.

Today, we’re asking our community to help us bridge one final gap.

Over the last few months, we have seen a significant increase in the demand for our services. At the same time, funding for LGBTQ+ organizations continues to be extremely scarce.

💃🏽✨ Join us for our final dance session on July 23 at 6PM!

Over the past weeks, we’ve had an amazing time learning merengue and cumbia together, building community through culture, movement, and joy. For our last session, we’ll be introducing a little salsa, so come ready to dance and celebrate with us!

Join Somos and Oakland Liberation Center for the upcoming Latin dance session!

Our last Latin Nights session was such a success, and we are so excited to invite our community back for the next two evenings of dance, joy, and connection. On July 9, participants will learn and celebrate the vibrant rhythms of Cumbia, and on July 23, we will close out the series with an energetic Salsa night. During our most recent gathering, we danced Merengue, and we were thrilled to see people of different experience levels come together, laugh, move, and build community.

At Somos Familia, we believe that dance belongs to everyone. These classes are about more than learning steps, they are about creating spaces where people feel connected, welcomed, and celebrated. Everyone deserves joy, and we are proud to offer opportunities that help strengthen community through culture, movement, and belonging.

Fue un honor participar en la conferencia anual Latidos y compartir un espacio de reflexión sobre la importancia de la aceptación familiar para jóvenes LGBTQ+.

Las familias tienen el poder de transformar vidas cuando eligen el amor, la comprensión y el apoyo. Durante nuestra presentación, conversamos sobre cómo crear hogares seguros y afirmativos donde cada joven pueda sentirse visto, valorado y amado por quien es.

Gracias a Latidos por abrir este importante diálogo y a todas las personas que participaron con sus experiencias, preguntas y compromiso con el bienestar de nuestras comunidades.

Today, our students showed up to prepare for May Day, grounded in courage, community, and a deep commitment to justice. Many of these young people are directly impacted by the ongoing political climate that continues to target immigrant families.

They are carrying real fear, real uncertainty, and still, they are choosing to organize, to lead, and to fight.

Now more than ever, our youth are rising to defend their rights and the right to keep their families together. As attacks on programs like DACA continue, students who are DACA recipients, and those navigating uncertain immigration status, are facing immense challenges. These are students we work closely with, students we care for deeply, and students who deserve safety, dignity, and opportunity.

It is our responsibility to stand with them. To uplift their leadership. To protect their futures. And to show up, not just in words, but in action.

May Day is more than a moment. It is a movement. And our youth are leading the way.
