Featuring Melanie Turner, an Oakland educator who is now able to live and work in the community she serves.

For many educators, staying in Oakland isn’t a given—it’s a challenge. Through Rooted, we’re working to change that by creating access to stable, affordable housing.

Swipe to hear from Melanie and see what that looks like in real life.

“It’s affordable for a teacher’s salary… I’m really grateful that it’s not only affordable, it’s comfortable.”

When educators can stay, communities stay strong.

One week ago, we came together around one shared goal: keeping Oakland educators in Oakland.
Community, partners, and leaders showing what’s possible when a city invests in its people.
This is just the beginning — 33 homes secured, 117 more to go.

Yesterday, The Oakland Fund announced the acquisition of a 33-unit apartment building—now preserved as affordable housing for educators through our program.

To our knowledge, this is the first nonprofit-led acquisition and preservation model of its kind focused specifically on educators. It took an extraordinary group of partners to make it happen.

The room was standing-room-only. What stayed with us most was hearing from educator Melanie Turner, who grounded us in why this work matters.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this to life.

This is just the beginning. Join us in bringing this model to more educators—learn more, share this post, and connect with us to support the work.

Still feeling the energy from Oakland’s Small Business Week Marketplace at Frank Ogawa Plaza! Thank you to everyone who came out to support local vendors, enjoy the music, and celebrate Oakland’s small business community.

Special thanks to for organizing a powerful day and to our sponsor partners and the City of Oakland’s Economic & Workforce Development department for making it possible.

Let’s keep uplifting our entrepreneurs and creatives — their love, grit, and brilliance shape the heart of our Town.

The OFPI x OakWeb Mayoral Forum brought community members, small business owners, and nonprofit leaders together for a conversation rooted in Oakland’s realities.

Candidates responded to questions on housing, small business recovery, public safety, and the future of arts and culture—driven entirely by the concerns of Oaklanders.

This forum was about listening, accountability, and building toward a city that works for everyone.

Read the newsletter for more photos, event highlights, and a link to the full recap of questions and candidate responses.

Rest & Resilience was a night to celebrate, connect, and restore. Educators, healers, and community leaders gathered for an evening of self-care, honoring the legacy of Black healers. From massages and yoga to candle-making and financial wellness support, the event provided OUSD staff with a space to recharge. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
