The intensified U.S. blockade of Cuba has caused the infant mortality rate in Cuba to rise from 4.2/1000 to 9.9. In other words, the blockade is killing Cuban infants. As one U.S. lawmaker put it, “It’s not just immoral, it’s evil.”

The Hatuey Project successfully delivered more than 1,000 pounds (26 checked bags!) of humanitarian relief to Cuba this week, the vast majority life-saving pediatric cancer meds. To that was added some vital food stuffs, including canned tomato product to assist with that shortage, which has caused pizzerias to close. 2 of the 3 trolleys packed with supplies are seen in the video.

While of course all this does little to overcome the deadly multi-level blockade and State Sponsor of Terrorism designation, it is strategic, life-saving, and a great act of solidarity with the Cuban people in their time of greatest need.

The great Cuban band, El Guajiro, played in a benefit for The Hatuey Project at the Ocean Ale House, San Francisco on Saturday, raising $6,085 for Cuban hospitals to treat children with cancer. Niki Franco of the Latin American Convoy & Gloria La Riva of Hatuey spoke of the U.S. blockade’s toll on the Cuban people, and of Cuba’s heroic resistance.
