The great Cuban band, El Guajiro, played in a benefit for The Hatuey Project at the Ocean Ale House, San Francisco on Saturday, raising $6,085 for Cuban hospitals to treat children with cancer. Niki Franco of the Latin American Convoy & Gloria La Riva of Hatuey spoke of the U.S. blockade’s toll on the Cuban people, and of Cuba’s heroic resistance.

The U.S. blockade doesn't just impact "the Cuban economy" in some abstract way, it impacts individual lives. The Hatuey Project, as part of the Latin America Convoy, just delivered a 5,000 watt solar battery and panels for a young child, 10-year-old Carlos in Guanabacoa Municipality, Havana, whose health condition is seriously impacted by the electrical blackouts, the U.S. blockade, and Trump's fuel siege of Cuba. Carlos and his family are victims, like all Cubans, of the criminal U.S. policy. The vast majority of people in the U.S. oppose these cruel and illegal policies. [Videographer: Luis de Jesús]

In March, the Hatuey Project was able to deliver nearly $35,000 worth of live saving cancer medications to support children’s hospitals. We were also able to deliver a 5,000 watt solar battery and two 500 watt solar panels to a family whose son is in critical condition.

This important work could not have been done without the support of many organizations to fundraiser for and deliver these medications. Thank you to the Movimiento Nacional Independentista Puertorriqueño Hostosiano, Americas Without Sanctions, Nicaragua Solidarity Committee, and Friends of Latin America for your tireless efforts and partnership to support Cuba under the inhuman U.S. blockade!

Dear friends of Cuba:

There is an emergency in Cuba. Please donate $100 — or more — to the Hatuey Project, so we can send urgently-needed Solar Power to Cuba!

As you know, Trump’s Jan. 29 Executive Order falsely declared Cuba an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security. With this declaration and order, Trump is forcing the complete cut-off of oil to Cuba. This is his real objective: He cynically believes he can force the Cuban people to surrender their independence and sovereignty by starving them into submission.

Energy is needed in everything for a society to run. Hospitals, schools, water delivery, transport, homes, public safety. Everything.

On top of the 64-year-old blockade signed by Kennedy in 1962 are more than 243 economic measures signed against Cuba by Trump, plus the absolutely false U.S. designation of Cuba as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” Although Trump declared it in his last month of the first term, it was President Biden who enforced it for four years. This has devastated Cuba’s economy since 2021.

AND YET, CUBA AND ITS DETERMINED PEOPLE HAVE RESISTED FOR DECADES.

Now Trump, after mercilessly bombing and killing over 130 people in boats of the Atlantic and Pacific since September, after kidnapping the head of state of Venezuela, President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, the U.S. has decided to try to put the nail in the coffin of Cuba’s economy. No Venezuelan oil has been delivered to Cuba since December.

THIS IS WHERE WE PEOPLE OF THE U.S. AND THE WORLD COME IN, LET’S STAND FOR CUBA!

Since 2024, The Hatuey Project (Health Advocates in Truth, Unity and EmpathY) has delivered an incredible, lifesaving amount of $202,940 of cancer medications, 3rd and 4th generation of antibiotics, and related medicines and supplies for pediatric hospitals in Cuba. In addition we have delivered 40 tons — $95,000 worth — of construction material to rebuild homes destroyed by hurricanes.

We just delivered another $25,000 worth of cancer meds in late January. As one doctor in the Hematology Institute told us, “You have brought us exactly what we needed for cancer patients.”

Our new goal is to continue the cancer medications for the children, AND IN THE MIDST OF THIS ENERGY EMERGENCY, solar panels and batteries that store the solar power, to Cuba’s hospitals, to the maternal homes for pregnant women at risk, and for disabled children’s and adults’ homes.

All the donations we receive go directly to the Cuban people. All our labor is volunteer.

If 500 of our friends can give $100 each, we will raise $50,000, which will go a long way to buying that solar power. If you can give more, we can reach and surpass our goal! We will continue along with so many friends of Cuba in the U.S. and around the world to let our neighbors know:

The US blockade has always been genocidal in intent; only the strength of the Cuban Revolution and the unity of the Cuban people has kept it from being genocidal in result. Now, increasingly, Cubans are actually dying as a result of the blockade, including children with cancer. 😡

Our efforts to combat the US blockade by bringing batches of pediatric cancer medications to Cuba purchased with your donations will of course continue. HatueyProject.org/donate. But they cannot overcome the devastating effects of the US oil blockade. It must end!

Every dollar you give will help save the lives of Cuban children with cancer

It has been U.S. policy since 1960 (https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1958-60v06/d499) to alienate the Cuban people from their leadership through policies which seek “to deny money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.”

While the effects of the U.S. blockade have had a damaging effect on the Cuban economy for many years, Donald Trump has now made it much, much worse. After first seizing a tanker of Venezuelan oil headed to Cuba, Trump declared last week (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/01/addressing-threats-to-the-united-states-by-the-government-of-cuba/) that “the policies, practices, and actions of the Government of Cuba constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat” and promised punitive measures against any country supplying oil to Cuba. This is the gravest possible threat to the Cuban people. If Trump's executive order is effective at cutting off oil supplies to Cuba, it is very likely that the long blackouts already occurring could become permanent. By targetting Cuba's electrical power, the U.S. is condemning the people to intensified suffering and death.

The Cuban government has denounced (https://cubaminrex.cu/en/cuba-condemns-and-denounces-new-escalation-us-economic-blockade) this U.S. threat in the strongest possible terms, and made clear it has no intention of surrendering to the flagrant violation of international law.

It is clear that material solidarity by organizations and independent governments must rise ever more to support Cuba. We at The Hatuey Project cannot provide oil to Cuba. But we can provide vital medical supplies, supplies which are needed now more than ever in this critical time.

A delegation from The Hatuey Project just returned from Cuba at the end of January after delivering significant cancer medicines and other supplies. We have pledged to keep shipping more urgently-needed medicines. Our delegation members pay for their own trip and travel, accompanied by suitcases loaded with medicine.

We depend solely on donations. Won't you please consider giving today?
