Do you have a passion for exploring the intersections of environment, food sovereignty, abolition, and social justice with youth?

One of our Planting Justice educators is going back to school (bc education is a lifelong endeavor), which means there is an immediate opening on our Education Team! Also congratulations Maria! She is going to study geography and the environment to continue working in climate resilience and environmental justice. 🥹

Planting Justice Educators lead and support learning opportunities across internal and external sites, ensuring that education is mission-aligned, effective, and meaningful for systems-impacted youth, adults and families. PJ Education Programs take place in public schools, at community sites, at PJ nurseries and the Mother Farm, and occasionally within jails and prisons.

- Planting Justice offers a competitive salary and benefits package
- Compensation for this position is $22.00-$26.50 an hour, depending on experience

We are looking for an experienced, strategic, and people-centered Director of HR to join our leadership team and help develop our workplace culture and organizational systems, and empower and support the people at the heart of this work!

We’re looking for someone with:
- 5-7+ years of progressive HR experience
- Strong knowledge of California employment law
- Experience with employee relations & nonprofit development
- Experience leading HR strategy and supporting managers

Knowledge of restorative justice, liberatory HR, or similar frameworks is highly valued!

This is a Full-Time hybrid Leadership Position, split between remote and on-site work in Oakland & El Sobrante, CA

Spanish Summer Youth Cohort Week 2

Esta semana, nuestros jóvenes pusieron manos a la obra y crearon soberanía alimentaria al cosechar y cocinar juntos. El poder definir cómo se crían, se cosechan y se cocinan nuestros alimentos es una parte clave de la soberanía alimentaria. Nuestra primera receta de la semana consistió en crear sándwiches enrollados usando clorofila y hierbas frescas que cultivamos en nuestro jardín comunitario.

Mientras que nuestra segunda receta de la semana ilustra otra parte importante de la soberanía alimentaria, la comida culturalmente apropiada. ¡Mucha de nuestra historia e identidad se encuentra en nuestras comidas! We are putting out a bunch of rare perennial bunching onions that are ready for you to plant! We have been propagating them in Oakland and Sacramento for several seasons, and they all do very well here.

Perennial alliums are hardy, low-maintenance herbs that provide continuous harvests of onion, garlic, and chive flavors year after year without replanting. This diverse group includes walking onions, multiplier shallots, garlic chives, bunching onions, and various perennial leek relatives that return reliably each season with vigorous growth. Unlike annual onions and garlic that require yearly planting and soil preparation, perennial alliums establish permanent patches that produce edible greens, bulbs, and flowers for decades with minimal care.

We have fresh stock of the Sibuyas Tagalog, I’Itoi, and Akakai bunching onions, and a refresh of McCullars White Walking Onion. Learn more about the unique characteristics of each on our website and get these rare varieties while you can!

Did you know that for every meal a food pantry provides, CalFresh (EBT) provides nine? Now, those benefits are at risk for certain adults without dependents because of federal work requirements.

Kindly take a few minutes to help people in our community who are trying to fulfill these work requirements in order to keep their benefits. Complete this survey ASAP to help crowdsource work-related opportunities.

Joe Urias, Director of Horticulture at Planting Justice, regularly works with staff to share his knowledge and experience with the different plant varieties we cultivate and sell. He was recently dropping avocado knowledge at the El Sobrante nursery, so we got him on camera to talk a little about avocados in the Bay Area (and outside of the Bay too!).

We have a ton of amazing looking avocados at both the El Sobrante and East Oakland nurseries, as well as on available to ship online. We are also going to be posting some more in-depth avocado knowledge and info soon, for all you plant 🌱 nerds 🤓 out there!
