At Sharing Our Roots, we are committed to helping our farmers grow thriving farm businesses 🌱

One way we do this is through hands-on technical trainings! In partnership with UMN Extension, we facilitated a soil health and w**d management training, where farmers built skills using seeding & w**ding tools and learned how tilling implements are used on the tractor.

Huge shoutout to our farm team, Alissa and Nicole, who make these learning opportunities possible. From coordinating instructors to gathering farmer feedback and creating accessible, supportive spaces to learn— they are the driving force behind our cohort 💚

Noemi, Wendy, and Antonio (left to right) are three of our Community Connectors that run our gardens across Northfield & Faribault. Last Thursday, we had a gardener plant giveaway in which we handed out hundreds of tomato, pepper, onion, tomatillo, kale, zucchini, and cilantro plants!

Over a 150 gardeners and their families came out to the SOR and Cannon River Park gardens, it was such a joy to start off the growing season with such a bang!

“Food is never just about eating…”
— Elkanah Abobo

Elkanah joined Sharing Our Roots as a farmer and is now a community connector, working to help our neighbors access land. Here is a peak at a discussion he facilitated with a Carleton class last week. His perspective on food as medicine and a means for connection fostered an enlightening reflection on the importance of food for our health, community, and environment.

If you want to learn more about the agricultural commons or local food sovereignty efforts in Southern MN, visit our website sharing-our-roots.org. You can also join us for one of our upcoming volunteer days on June 9th or July 14th to see our programming in action and help out around our Farm & natural lands!

Beautiful violets blooming in our woods 💜 Wild violets are native to MN and thrive in soils with high levels of organic matter. This glorious sight is only possible because we manage invasive species on our Farm. Buckthorn had previously taken over our woods, disrupting native plant diversity. Removal of invasive species is a critical practice we use at Sharing Our Roots to ensure our native ecosystems can flourish as they are meant to. Our violets are a welcome sign that our native plants are returning and prospering🌱
