Wide Rainbow

Wide Rainbow Wide Rainbow is a contemporary art after school program. We are a free 501c3 non-profit based in NYC that connects contemporary artists with the community.

We serve low-income neighborhoods with limited or no access to the arts or arts education. Affiliated with like-minded organizations and institutions, Wide Rainbow initiates contemporary art collaborations, creating progressive workshops and inspiring after-school activities. Partnering with contemporary artists within the community, Wide Rainbow aims to promote access to art and culture today, in

vigorating the creative spirit of otherwise underserved or neglected youth of New York City. Artists become teachers, mentors, and natural proponents of creative development. www.widerainbow.org

Emma Otheguy ( .otheguy ) is the author of several books for children, including the picture books A Sled for Gabo and Martina Has Too Many Tías, the bilingual picture book Martí’s Song for Freedom, and the middle-grade novels Sofía Acosta Makes a Scene and Silver Meadows Summer.

Otheguy’s books emphasize the deep connections between Latin America and the United States and aim to share these stories of bridges and convergences with everyday kids. Before becoming a writer and historian, Otheguy graduated from Swarthmore College, sold books at an independent bookstore, and taught elementary-school Spanish.

Tschabalala Self ( b.1990 Harlem, New York) lives and works in the Hudson Valley, New York. Self is an artist who builds a singular style from the syncretic use of painting, printmaking and sculpture to explore ideas surrounding figuration. She constructs depictions of predominantly women using a combination of sewn, printed, and painted materials, traversing different artistic and craft traditions. The formal and conceptual aspects of Self’s work seek to expand her critical inquiry into selfhood and human flourishing.

It was an honor to visit the New Museum ( ) for a very special workshop hosted by artist Tschabalala Self ( ), whose work “Art Lovers” adorns the facade of the new addition to the museum. It will live there for the next two years, inspiring countless New Yorkers like our students at TYWLS ( ), who Tschaba guided as they made their own textile figurations inspired by the piece.

The eccentric personalities, the fashion, the architecture: these everyday elements—a perpetual source of inspiration—are why New Zealander Mokshini ( ) now calls Brooklyn home. Mokshini is a multi-disciplinary artist whose creative output ranges from painting to concept sketching, editorial collaborations, and textile design. All feature her signature witty, yet sophisticated take on daily life in the city, which is borne of her whimsical portrayal of characters and a passion for storytelling.
