Service in Action: Blessing Bags with the Rome Leos

The Rome Lions Club recently partnered with the incredible students of the Rome Leo Club at Rome Free Academy for a hands-on service project with real impact.

Together, they assembled 100 blessing bags filled with basic first aid essentials—items that can make a big difference for someone facing homelessness.

But here’s the part we love most:
These kits were built using repurposed eyeglass cases from our ongoing collection efforts.

Instead of letting those sturdy cases go to waste, they were transformed into compact first aid kits—filled with bandages, antibiotic ointment, and other essentials. Durable, portable, and practical.

A simple idea. A real need met.
And a powerful lesson for our Leos:
Look at what you already have
Find a new purpose for it
Use it to serve someone else
That’s what service looks like.

While usable eyeglasses continue on their journey—sorted, refurbished, and distributed to help restore sight—these cases now serve a different mission: care, dignity, and preparedness for those in need.

We’re proud of our Leos for stepping up and making a difference.

And proud to support projects that turn “something old” into something that matters.

Turns out, changing lives doesn’t always require something new—just a willingness to see old things differently.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling tonight's event. I have heard nothing but sirens all morning, and we don't want to get anyone in that boat. If you have donations for Stable families or would like to check out the club, please feel free to drop them off and stay for a meeting next Tuesday, December 9th, at 6:00 PM at the Rome Art and Community Center in the carriage house. Thank you for your understanding!

🎃📚 Books, Not Cavities!

The Rome Lions turned heads (and probably confused a few dentists) at MVCC’s annual Trick or Treat Street on October 30th. While everyone else was tossing out candy, we handed out books—over 400 of them!

More than 800 kids came through, and we’re pretty sure at least a few future bookworms were born that night. We also racked up 15 volunteer hours and strutted out with the coveted “Best Giveaway” trophy!

Huge thanks to Lions Marie Viscelli, Sue Hert, Amanda Grant, Mary Chmielewski, and Michelle McVay for bringing the energy, the smiles, and the stacks of stories.

Literacy is one of our biggest projects—because a good book lasts longer than a sugar rush, and strong reading skills open doors faster than a full-size candy bar ever could.

SOCIAL NIGHT WITH THE ROME LIONS CLUB
🍕🍷 Good food. Great people. Real impact.

Join us on Tuesday, December 2, from 6–8 PM at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course for an evening of fun, friendship, and service.

We’ll have a full spread—pizza, stuffed bread, bruschetta, boneless wings, veggie and cheese trays, plus wine and beer!

Thinking about getting involved in the community? Come hang out and learn what the Rome Lions Club is all about. No pressure, no speeches—just good company and a chance to make a difference.

We’re also collecting donations for the Stable Families Program, which helps local families in need.
🧴 Items needed: shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, tissues, and feminine products.

👉 Bring a friend. Bring a donation. Bring your appetite.
Let’s do some good together.
