The Rehearsal Club Famed 20th Century theatrical residence in New York for aspiring actresses. Between 1924 and 1926, John D. Rockefeller, Jr.

The first Rehearsal Club opened its doors in 1913 at 218-220 West 46th Street in the heart of New York’s theater district. Co-founders Jean “Daisy” Greer, daughter of New York’s Episcopal bishop, and Episcopal Deaconess Jane Harriss Hall designed the Club as a sanctuary for young actresses: a rest stop between auditions and, for girls of immediate need, a safe place to live. purchased and remodeled two handsome brownstones in his neighborhood. He leased them for $1/year to the Club. 45-47 West 53rd Street would be the Rehearsal Club for over 50 years, until fiscal crises prompted its closing in 1979. Alumni went on to include Carol Burnett, Kim Cattrall, and Blythe Danner. Visit our website to find how more and learn how the Rehearsal Club continues to live on in film, stage and print.

A little summer highlight from our Brownstone community! ❤️
Thanks to the generosity of Meredith Schade, our residents were gifted tickets to the premiere of Hadestown! They absolutely loved the film and had a blast getting to enjoy this special experience.
We love seeing our residents make memories together both inside and outside the Brownstone.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Summer!

Resident Life at The Rehearsal Club 💌

Our residents recently spent an evening together personally signing thank-you letters to the generous donors who help make their Brownstone home possible.
It was a simple but meaningful way for the residents to recognize the larger TRC community that supports them. Every contribution helps The Rehearsal Club continue its mission of providing affordable housing and a supportive community for young women pursuing careers in the performing arts in New York City.
To all of our donors and supporters, thank you for being such an important part of the TRC community and for helping make the Brownstone a place our residents can call home. ❤️

🎬 A Glimpse from the Past: Stage Door

Did you know that the classic 1937 film Stage Door was inspired by The Rehearsal Club?

Edna Ferber’s niece, aspiring actress Janet Fox, was a resident of TRC, and Ferber visited the Club while developing the story of young women pursuing careers in the theatre.

Ferber and George S. Kaufman’s Stage Door opened on Broadway in 1936 before becoming the famous 1937 film starring Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers.

The fictional Footlights Club may have been on the screen, but its inspiration was very real. TRC continues that legacy today by providing a home and community for emerging performing artists.

Had you heard about the connection between Stage Door and The Rehearsal Club? We’d love to hear from our TRC community!

The summer has been a busy one at the Brownstone!

Between self-tapes, working, acting, taking classes, and continuing to hone their craft, our residents have certainly kept busy. So it was wonderful to see them take some time away from the hustle for brunch together at French Roast on the Upper West Side.

This summer also welcomed three new residents to the Brownstone! Elizabeth and Rowan, who joined us from Miami, Florida, and Carly, who joined us from Cincinnati, Ohio.

While so much of the resident experience is focused on building a career in the arts, some of the most meaningful moments happen in between the auditions and classes. Sharing a meal, endless conversation, and building the friendships that make a place feel like home.

That’s a big part of what we love about life at the Brownstone. There’s always something happening, but there’s also a community of people who understand the excitement, uncertainty, and adventure of pursuing an artistic life in New York City.

For our TRC community: What’s a favorite memory you have of gathering with fellow artists or friends during your own NYC years? We’d love to hear your stories. 💛

Our first musical salon was an enchanting evening on many levels. Our stunning brownstone home was filled with music, w**e, flowers, and a true cornucopia of talent. Guests delighted in the camaraderie of our community—the joy was palpable—and everyone left with a sense of “what could be.” What could be more magical than that?

Pictured here are two of our stunningly talented residents, and who contributed to the musical events of the evening. Beautiful work ladies!!
