Good News
Hurray for loving fathers!
As father's love their children, teach them about life, coach sports, what else do they do?
Fathers, like all parents, get to tell their children about Jesus dying and rising, about Jesus giving us forgiveness and mercy and life. And because Jesus' mercy is a gift, it frees the children from the pressures of having to achieve things in order to get their father's attention or to get him to be proud of them. Fathers can be proud of their children just because they love them.
Such a way of being a father is a great comfort to his children.
Jesus' mercy is a great comfort to us all.
Peace,
Pastor Hoyer

Good News
What is going to happen today? Just the usual?
But the usual is always salted with a bit of "you get out of it what you put into it." And that is not mercy.
Jesus urgently wanted mercy brought to people. To prepare people for his arrival as he went from village to village, Jesus sent his twelve disciples out and told them to say, "The kingdom of God has come near." Jesus meant that instead of the usual being ruled by getting paid for how much or how little you tried, the usual would now be ruled by his mercy. To show that mercy, he gave his disciples the power to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cleanse the lepers.
Jesus did not send them out to reprimand people or judge them or criticize them or evaluate them. People already had that in their lives. The disciples gave people mercy instead of the usual way of reward and punishment. Mercy is a comfort and a relief.
Jesus died to make his way of mercy greater than death. Jesus was raised from the dead to lift his way of mercy above all other ways of life. Right now, today, for you, Jesus gives you his mercy.
Peace,
Pastor Hoyer

Good News
The man was scorned, even hated. He was labeled as a sinner. There were political issues, too.
The man faced the hate every day. It's all there was.
People felt it was right to hate him. He broke God's laws.
One day Jesus saw him and said to him, "Follow me." He left his job and followed Jesus. He left the hate. He trusted that Jesus would be a better place to be than his job.
That man was Matthew who later wrote the Gospel of Matthew.
Jesus came to give the world mercy from God. He came to care for the sick, to forgive mistakes, to raise the dead. He died and rose from the dead--God's proof that God has sent us Jesus.
Jesus gives you a place of mercy. He says to you, "Follow me."
Peace,
Pastor Hoyer

Good News

We share the peace of Christ during church. We do it very easily. How easy is it to say the same thing at home on a Tuesday? How easy is it to say to a friend at work?
Jesus gave power to his disciples so they could talk of Jesus. Jesus commissioned them to speak his forgiveness to all nations. On Pentecost, the power to do that--the Holy Spirit--was given to the disciples. And on that day, with people from around the world gathered in Jerusalem, the disciples spoke of Jesus to all nations. They said that God had made Jesus the savior, the one who had been crucified. God did that by raising Jesus from the dead.
Three thousand people were baptized on that day. That was the beginning of the church. The people devoted themselves to hearing the stories of Jesus, to fellowship, the breaking of the bread (Communion), and praying.
That is what we do still, all so that forgiveness--being made right with God--can be given to us and anyone we tell it to. You have the power to tell people they are forgiven. You have the Holy Spirit.

Peace,
Pastor Hoyer
