We are so grateful for the season of stability and growth to cone here at UCAN City Mission!

In our latest blog post, Operations Manager Timothy Miller reflects on our staffing journey—looking back at past challenges and celebrating the six wonderful new team members who have joined us to support our guests, 3rd shift, Sunday mornings, and casework.

From groundskeeping and yard work to organizing supplies, cleaning rooms at the men's shelter, and helping set up the future women’s and children’s shelter, your hard work truly shines.

It really does warm our hearts when people volunteer to cook a meal for our guys. We are very blessed to have so many tremendous supporters like this in the community, and we couldn't do it without our supporters.

Out of a negative situation, God provided a chance for community and growth. Jamestown Parks, Recreation & Conservation Department called with a volunteer opportunity for our guests, and these two men eagerly stepped forward to clean up graffiti across the city. We are so grateful for local partnerships that empower our guests to give back, work together, and make Jamestown a brighter place for everyone!

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." – 1 Peter 4:10

‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” — Jeremiah 29:11

When a guest moves on from UCAN City Mission, we always pray for blessings over their next chapter. Every once in a while, someone leaves behind a mark that touches every single one of us.

Recently, one of our guests exited our shelter—someone who served with a servant’s heart every single day. Whether he was keeping spaces spotless, offering a listening ear to console a neighbor in need, working diligently, or lifting others up in prayer, he did it all with grace and a genuine smile. He even wrote personal notes of encouragement to staff members before leaving.

Inside his room, we found this letter placed on the desk, addressed simply: "To whoever stays in this room after me."

In it, he wrote:

"A difficult chapter does not mean it is the end of your story... As long as you are breathing, there is hope. Tomorrow can bring something you cannot see today... May God guide you, protect you, give you strength when you feel weak, and remind you that your story is still being written."

This letter is a beautiful reminder to all of us of what happens when we offer dignity, courtesy, and compassion to those going through tough times. A little grace goes a really long way, and we should never be afraid to show it.

We will miss him greatly, but we are so excited for everything God has in store for his journey. Please join us in praying for him and for the next guest who steps into that room to read those words.

Big Progress Update: The UCAN Women & Children’s Shelter

It has taken years—decades, even—of dedicated work, relentless prayer, and unwavering persistence. At times, it felt like we faced more setbacks than successes, but God is faithful, and progress is officially happening right here in Jamestown!

We are so excited to share where things stand with our new Emergency Shelter for Women & Children:

Approved Plans & Architecture: All architectural plans have been fully drafted and approved! A huge thank you to Chris Cooke Architecture— they have been absolutely amazing to work with and have done a phenomenal job bringing this vision to life.

Site Prep & Asbestos Abatement: Delete 86 Environmental has completed the asbestos cleanout. Before contractor crews stepped in, an incredible team of volunteers, shelter guests, staff, and board members all came together to clear out and prepare the building.

Security & Tech: Our IT drafted a complete interior security camera plan, which has been approved and will be installed during the renovation to keep our future residents safe and secure.

Construction Underway: Stone Hill Homes have finalized their strategy with the architect, prepped the site, and official work on the building has begun!

Getting to this milestone has taken an immense amount of effort, but we are moving forward at a steady pace.

First and foremost, we give thanks to God. But we also know this has truly taken our entire community—collaboration with the City of Jamestown, NY - Municipal Page, partner organizations, generous supporters, and fellow followers of Jesus.

Thank you for praying, believing, and standing with us. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue building a place of hope, safety, and refuge for local families!

At UCAN City Mission, we believe that providing shelter is only the first step. Sustainable recovery and stability require long-term tools—and employment is a vital piece of that puzzle.

That’s why we’re proud to partner with Southern Tier Environments for Living, Inc. - STEL, Inc. Jobs (STEL) to introduce dedicated vocational training to our guests. Led by Vocational Specialist Heather Birch, these interactive sessions help participants recognize their strengths, build job-seeking skills, and prepare for interviews with local employers.

When people are given the opportunity and support to succeed, whole lives change.

Thank you, Heather (Pictured speaking to guests at UCAN City Mission) and STEL, for investing in our community and building hope alongside us! 🌱
