We are an all-woman run, foster-based, animal rescue and advocacy organization based in New York. Together, our members bring to the group decades of experience in rescuing, rehabbing, and finding homes for some of the most routinely overlooked, mistreated, and exploited animals – ducks and chickens. Domestic fowl suffer by the billions each year, with few people advocating on their behalf or even aware of their plight. Over the last several years, we have worked tirelessly to rescue hundreds of birds from abandonment, neglect, and abuse. When working with animals, it becomes immediately apparent that they all have one thing in common – the will to live, and to live their lives in peace, comfort, and safety.

Meet Daizy, another live market escapee, this time in Brooklyn. A kind hearted couple found her on the streets a few weeks ago and took her in. Their kindness and sacrifice (it’s not easy having a duck indoors let alone a terrified one) saved her life. Thanks to them she is on her way to join a small flock of other survivors in one of our foster homes.

What goes on behind a typical rescue? Here are the workings behind the rescue of the seven khakis in Brooklyn last weekend….and this is all before quarantine has begun!

Michelle and Angela found the ducks in the cemetery and knew they needed help;

They contacted us and our rescuer extraordinaire Mary Beth Purdy Artz raced out to help catch the terrified birds;

Ed and Elizabeth offered the use of their garage as a temporary holding space for the ducks;

Our rescuer and logistical genius Karen recruited a brand new foster and coordinated their set up…. Everything from obtaining supplies, transporting equipment, and building the structures;

Christina donated a night house big enough for seven ducks;

Melissa, Jonah, and James prepared the night house for use;

Tristan and Arnold loaded and transported the night house;

Eileen transported the ducks;

Joanne and Dave are fostering the ducks for the 45-day quarantine period and helping them heal.

Thank you everyone who helped! And especially Caroline and Karen for coordinating the whole effort.

The most abused animals on the planet. As a society we pluck them for pillows and coats, we slaughter them for meat, we force feed them for foie gras, we exploit them for eggs, we keep them in horrible “backyard” conditions, we give ducklings in Easter baskets, we dump them in parks and leave them to die. They suffer unimaginably. If we can prevent just an ounce of this suffering we’ve done our jobs.

Another duck emergency. The birds we posted about yesterday are safe in a foster home. We had to take down the post because there is hopefully going to be a criminal investigation into their abandonment. But today, seven khaki campbell ducks showed up in Greenwood Cemetery. They are petrified. Horrified. Terrified of people. These birds undoubtedly came from a live market, where they lived in horrific, filthy, cramped wire cages and watched other birds be grabbed and slaughtered all day long. If you’ve ever walked into a live market you will understand their terror. Now we have seven more ducks on our hands, 4 males and 3 females. We are hoping to raise some money for their care as they will need a new enclosure. Donations can be sent by paypal to [email protected]. Any amount is so appreciated. And of course we will need homes for these ducks after quarantine.

Juliet, now Cinnamon, has been adopted to a wonderful home. She will be very slowly introduced to the two other ducks in the home, as all of them (including Juliet) are very human-centric and duck-wary. No matter what happens, she will be very very loved.
