November 10-December 18: Only three spots remain for the next cohort of Together We Work, a pilot program to train people with developmental disabilities to serve as Peer Specialists.

In-person training is offered to New York City residents with remote opportunities for those living on Long Island, and in the Lower Hudson Valley.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve had the honor of celebrating an incredible group of Smile Farmer of the Year nominees. Now, we’re thrilled to announce that, for the first time ever, we are recognizing TWO Smile Farmers of the Year! 🌱

Meet James and Kevin, the dynamic duo from Smile Farms at CP Unlimited 💚

This year’s Growing Together Gala is a celebration of community, connection and the ways we help one another thrive. We couldn’t think of two Smile Farmers who embody that spirit more than James and Kevin.

Side by side, they have learned together, worked together, supported one another and, most importantly, grown together. 🌱

Their friendship reminds us that growth isn’t something that happens alone. It happens when we have opportunities to contribute, people who believe in us and a community to grow alongside.

Thank you to our attendees, supporters, and sponsors who turned out for the first Roots of Hope dinner benefitting the work of CP Unlimited on Staten Island on Tuesday.

As an organization that got its start in the borough 80 years ago, the event was an opportunity to recognize the history and progress of CP Unlimited while acknowledging some important partnerships that have propelled independence and mobility for the people with disabilities supported by the Agency.

During the program, CPU highlighted the work of Smile Farms, the non-profit arm of 1-800-FLOWERS, with whom the organization operates two greenhouses cultivating various plants and edibles and supporting two workers with I/DD. The produce from the greenhouses made its way into the menu for Roots of Hope and all of the attendees enjoyed oregano, basil, thyme, and greens grown outside CPU’s Cora Hoffman Center.

CPU also honored New York State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (District 23) with the CPU Ability Hero Award for her critical support of the M.O.V.E. program and her commitment to our mission and the people we support.

“Thank you to the entire team at CP Unlimited. To be able to able to give back to the community that has given 80 years is so unbelievably near and dear to my heart. [We] owe this community a tremendous debt. These are the best advocates in the entire state of New York. My job is to have those voices reflected in everything I do. I love CP Unlimited,” said Senator Scarcella-Spanton.

Additional remarks were provided by Kamillah Hanks Council Member-D49, Edwina Martin, Commissioner and Public Administrator for Richmond County, and Nisha Agarwal, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities.

A special announcement was also made by Smile Farms themselves, as they revealed that the 2026 Smile Farmers of the Year award went to two of CPU’s persons supported who work in the greenhouses: James Cuomo and Kevin Lipton!

A magical and delicious experience was created for diners and the event raised necessary funds for the Agency’s efforts on Staten Island. 🫜

As part of our series of complimentary wheelchair clinics, CPU’s rehabilitation team worked on 214 chairs in total helping people with disabilities, seniors, and veterans gain increased mobility and independence with greater safety.

Throughout March to October, from Suffolk County to Staten Island and Senior Centers, CPU helped people across New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. The clinics are funded by a grant from the Mother Cabrini foundation and began in 2023 as a pilot program.

To date, the Agency has serviced nearly 1,000 wheelchairs! 👨‍🦽‍➡️

An amazing final wheelchair clinic of the season in Fishkill at CPU's Day Hab program where we repaired and cleaned over 20 chairs yesterday.
