As the 25th anniversary approaches, the Empty Sky Memorial still lacks key design elements promised to families of nearly 800 victims, while New York and Pennsylvania completed their tributes years ago.

Joseph Downey’s grandfather was one of the FDNY’s most decorated firefighters and a bona fide department icon. On Thursday, Downey will graduate from the department’s Fire Academy, becoming a third-generation FDNY firefighter.

The Father’s Day fire of 2001 killed three brave men. Always remembered.

Twenty-five years ago, three FDNY members made the Supreme Sacrifice in an event now known as the Father’s Day Fire.

On June 17, 2001, Firefighter John J. Downing, of Ladder 163, and Firefighters Brian D. Fahey and Harry S. Ford, both of Rescue 4, were killed during an explosion at a fire in a hardware store on Astoria Boulevard in Queens. It was Father’s Day that year.

The three firefighters left behind eight children between them.
