Domestic Violence Project at the Urban Justice Center Attorneys & Advocates providing a holistic approach for survivors of intimate partner violence

Domestic Violence is a pattern of behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other person.

1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced domestic violence/sexual assault before the age of 18

MYTH: Domestic violence only happens in straight relationships
FACT: Statistics by the NCAVP show that Domestic Violence occurs in 25-30% of same-sex relationships - about equal to the rate of occurrence in straight relationships. MYTH: The law does not protect victims of LGBTQ Domestic Violence
FACT: While police officers may remain confused when attempting to sort out incidents involving same gender couples, THE LAW IS ON YOUR SIDE. ASK YOURSELF:

- Do you feel afraid or responsible for your partners' temper or behavior?
- Does your partner call you names, insult you, or humiliates you - in private or in public?
- Have you been hit, kicked, shoved?
- Are you wrongly accused of having affairs or being unfaithful?
- Does your partner threaten to 'out' you if you do not do what your partner says?
- Have you been forced to have sex? TO GET HELP, REACH OUT - at a safe time CALL

… and one more throwback to our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration from 10/3, because we just can’t get enough.

As we wind down our month-long fiesta, we’ll continue to highlight the incredible Laino/a/x people of NYC and their stories — the stories of our family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, clients, and so many others. Thank you for following along, and to everyone who supported, submitted, and contributed to this incredible celebration!

From last Friday’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration: survivor clients and volunteers from the NYC community brought cuisine from across Latin America. It’s one of the best — and easily the most delicious — way to experience a world of Hispanic cultures, all brought together on one plate.

Thanks again to everyone who attended, participated, cooked for, served, and supported this incredible day!

Last Friday, DVP hosted its very first Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration... and it was INCREDIBLE. From the music and dancing to the live performances and amazing food - both provided by our multi-talented DVP survivor clients - this was a jam-packed event that perfectly captured the joy, passion, and love that only something like Hispanic Heritage Month can bring.

There are so many great shots from our party, and we’re starting with highlights of the spectacular performers and presenters who brought Hispanic culture to the halls of 40 Rector. Stay tuned for more pics and clips throughout the next few weeks — and thank you to all who attended, supported, and brought the energy!

The first question we asked participants during Hispanic Heritage Month was simple: “What makes YOU proud to be Latina/o?” Here is just a small sample of the great things we heard.
