TBI Action Alliance is committed to advancing Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research and awareness through the TBI Precision Research Roadmap. Here's a glimpse into our 7 lines of effort:

1. Injury burden: Identifying the disease burden across all populations and injury severities.
2. Disease models: Developing translational disease models based on trauma pathogenesis.
3. Precision diagnosis: Validating diagnostic biomarkers for TBI.
4. Targeted therapeutics: Fast-tracking first-generation TBI therapeutics.
5. Clinical practice implementation: Accelerating adoption of best practices and precision therapeutic approaches.
6. Translational infrastructure: Addressing infrastructure and technology gaps.
7. Awareness and advocacy: Placing TBI at the forefront of U.S. public policy and reducing stigma.

These efforts are made possible through the power of collaboration. Together, we're identifying research gaps and ensuring a coordinated effort to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by traumatic brain injuries. A recent report in PNAS highlighted the impact of repeated blast exposure on active-duty United States Special Operations Forces. But how do low-level blasts cause TBI?

Scientists in the PANTHER Program have used physics to explain how these injuries occur. Learn more at: bit.ly/3UHklNe

The people manning the guns are also at risk of injury from the force of the weapon.

Recent research highlights a powerful link between diet and brain health.

A new study has analyzed data from 181,990 participants in the UK Biobank, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced diet for cognitive function, mental well-being and brain structure.

This research underlines the critical role of dietary choices in maintaining optimal brain health and offers actionable insights for policymakers to promote accessible and healthy eating.

April is Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month.

Did you know that there's a significant link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Parkinson's disease (PD)? Studies have found that elderly adults with a history of TBI have a higher risk of developing PD. Learn more about TBI and PD from the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research: bit.ly/4bakJsK

At the TBI Action Alliance, we're dedicated to accelerating research and development focused on diagnosing and treating TBIs to reduce TBI-related symptoms, such as PD. Join us in spreading awareness about Parkinson's Disease and TBI this month.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) recently published a study developed by U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and others on the impact of repeated blast exposure on active-duty United States Special Operations Forces. This research advances understanding of the causes in Traumatic Brain Injury in military personnel.

Key findings include that repeated exposure to blasts can cause significant changes in the structure, function, and neuroimmune markers of the brain. Brain alterations from repeated blast brain injury (rBBI) were associated with an area of the brain that modulates cognition and emotion, and a decrease in overall health-related quality of life.

These insights underscore the urgent need for a large cohort, longitudinal study of rBBI in this population. Further studies will aid in development of an early diagnostic test for rBBI, which has the potential to enhance warfighters’ combat readiness, career longevity, and quality of life.

At the TBI Action Alliance, we congratulate the US SOCOM for funding this study and we are committed to advancing research and solutions that can help veterans and others who suffer from TBI-related symptoms.

The TBI Action Alliance applauds the release of the 2024 National Strategy for Su***de Prevention by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Su***de remains a pressing public concern, particularly among Veterans, active duty service members and civilians suffering from PTSD and TBI, both of which dramatically increase the risk for su***de. This bold new 10-year, comprehensive, whole-of-society approach to su***de prevention provides concrete recommendations for addressing gaps in the su***de prevention field and builds upon work from the National Action Alliance for Su***de Prevention (Action Alliance): bit.ly/4de7etU
