We welcome the addition of Goldy Brar on the FBI’s Most Wanted List as part of a comprehensive investigation into India's alleged use of criminal proxies to execute transnational repression across North America.

As we have said before, however, a full response to transnational repression cannot end with only bringing street-level criminals—even those who lead their networks—to justice. There must also be consequences and accountability for any government leaders involved in these plots.

In his latest speech railing against "beardos" in the U.S. military, Secretary Hegseth claims that he wants to provide "first-class religious support" to servicemembers.

The secretary's obsession with men's appearance, however, blinds him to the needs of religious troops. Over the past year, his policies have forced every servicemember with a religious accommodation through a bureaucratic process to re-apply for a waiver that they already earned. The truth is that Secretary Hegseth’s newly announced Office of Religious Affairs is likely to advance only a very specific and narrow definition of religious liberty—one aligned with his own beliefs. He continues to insist, after all, that “diversity is not our strength.”

In the meantime, the Sikh Coalition and our partners continue to stay vigilant in the face of shifting policies, and to help Sikh servicemembers who encounter challenges with their accommodations processes.

In India, the Delhi High Court has granted bail to Jagtar (“Jaggi”) Singh Johal, a British citizen who was detained by the Indian government in 2017 and reportedly tortured without cause. As a civil rights organization, we welcome this news and support all efforts to ensure that Mr. Johal is safely released from custody.

The Sikh activist from Dumbarton was arrested in 2017 in India in connection with alleged terror offences.
