While the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) was a prominent milestone in the fight for equality for people with disabilities, the work to ensure inclusion for our community was not yet done.

In 2008, the ADA Amendments Act, championed by our newest member of the NOD Board of Directors, former Congressmen Jim Langevin, expanded the redefined disability to provide civil rights to a broader group of Americans. For over 40 years, the National Organization on Disability has been at the forefront of the disability movement-- helping to change minds, practices, and policy.

In 2014, NOD’s president Carol Glazer handed the pen to President Obama to sign a crucial piece of legislation (Sec. 503) which opened the doors to employment by federal contractors for millions of people with disabilities.

Today NOD and allied disability rights organizations are partnering to repeal 14(c) and ensure no workers with disabilities are paid subminimum wages. With the announcement of Congressman Jim Langevin, an eloquent and fierce supporter of disability rights joining our board this week, NOD will continue to fight for the rights of all citizens.

As we celebrate today’s anniversary of the seminal Americans with Disability Act, we honor and mourn the passing of Judy Heumann this year.

Judy was often called the mother of the Disability Rights Movement; it is due to the extraordinary advocacy of her and other champions, that the ADA was passed in 1990, protecting the civil rights of our community.

Judy was a good friend to NOD and her unwavering dedication and strong voice helped to break down barriers for people with disabilities around the world.

There is still much to be done and the fight continues.

July 26 marks 33 years since the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, and this week, NOD is celebrating the champions of the Movement including our founding president, Alan A. Reich.

For 23 years as president of NOD (1982-2005), Alan Reich fought for disability inclusion, from building a bipartisan coalition to sponsor and pass the in 1990, to campaigning for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial to depict the U.S. president in a wheelchair.

Reich succeeded in having the United Nations declare 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons, where he was the first person, with paraplegia, to address the UN General Assembly from a wheelchair.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a significant milestone that marked the beginning of the journey toward racial justice and equality. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people were finally emancipated. It’s a day to honor African American history, culture, and resilience, but also acknowledge the ongoing fight for racial equality.

We encourage businesses and individuals alike to join us in celebrating Juneteenth by taking meaningful action. Here are some ways you can honor this important holiday:

• Educating: Spend time learning about or teaching African American history and the significance of Juneteenth.
• Volunteering: Engage with local organizations dedicated to racial justice today or sign up to volunteer
• Amplifying: Use your platform to amplify the voice of African American entrepreneurs, activists, and creatives

Here are just a few of the organizations dedicated to achieving racial equality:
Color Of Change, Dream Defenders, LIVE FREE, Black Youth Project
