Volunteer Spotlight: Sewing for Others
The women from the Sewing For Others group at Salem Lutheran Church get together every week to make quilts to donate to those who may need them. Members find inexpensive fabrics at thrift stores, garage sales and in their fabric collections and put them together in beautiful new patterns. One member pieces together the top of the quilt, then they all gather to sew it, fill it, and quilt it. They make about 30 quilts per year and have donated them to international relief organizations in the past, but this year decided to keep them local and recently donated ten quilts to our family shelter. Six adults and four children will now have beautiful, colorful quilts to make them feel warm and cared for. We appreciate their hard work and generosity!

Are you interested in donating items or organizing a donation drive to gather supplies for our family shelter? Items needed include high chairs, port-a-cribs, bathroom and kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies, and more. Contact Tracy at [email protected] for more detailed information, or call (360) 416-7585.

Last week, we celebrated a massive milestone alongside the Mount Vernon School District and many others who made the day possible for the ground breaking of Kulshan Vista Village Phase I!

Located close to La Venture Middle School, Phase I of this project will build 24 affordable apartments for local families with school-aged children facing housing instability.

What’s next?
With capital fundraising complete for Phase I, final permits are underway, and construction starts this summer! The goal is to start moving families into by Fall 2027.

The School District will help refer families, and Community Action will provide ongoing support services to ensure long-term success. Because when kids have a stable place to sleep, they come to school ready to learn.
