While spending a week at Lake Chelan, I had the opportunity to attend the Rotary Club of Lake Chelan. The setting is the Sorrento's Ristorante in Chelan with beautiful views of the lake. The club meets on Tuesdays beginning at 12 noon. I found the club to be very vibrant and welcoming. I was present to see the club induct three new (and enthusiastic) members and hear an outstanding presentation from the current District 5060 Governor, Jill Leonard. I was impressed to learn more about their programs, particularly their "Book Buddies" program. If you ever visit the region, I strongly encourage you to attend.

Hands Across the Border, a gathering in which Rotarians from District 5050 in the US and Canada came together on August 8th at the Peace Arch. The event was an opportunity to demonstrate peace among the two countries and recognize Rotary Clubs in the District. We began under the Peace Arch, with Canadians standing on one side and Americans on the other. A replica of the Peace Arch was passed along one by one to all the participants. We then moved to the Heritage Hall on the BC side for a program. We heard from Christina Winkler, a Peace Arch Historian, and Chris Offer, Past District 5040 Governor and a Peace Advocate. It was a wonderful time to recognize Foundation Giving Clubs and as well as Rotary Clubs demonstrating excellence.

The Rotary Club of Mount Vernon has created a partnership with one of the programs of the Skagit Boys and Girls Clubs. Peak Pursuits provides outdoor experiences for children and youth who don't have opportunities to camp, hike, kayak, bike and enjoy the outdoors. Rachel Olson is Executive Director of Peak Pursuits. Our Rotary Club has worked to help purchase a 10' trailer to haul the outdoor equipment. We were also able to secure a District Grant to help purchase the trailer. There are still a few items needed to complete the exterior and interior of the trailer, but it is functional and hauling supplies to the various outdoor sites. On Saturday, June 13, members of our Rotary Club helped clean some of the outdoor equipment that will be used this summer. Backpacks, tents and tarps were washed and cleaned in preparation for the season. The Club's commitment will be to help unpack and clean outdoor supplies in the fall, and prepare outdoor supplies in the spring. It is great to be a part of a Rotary Club that is providing a positive experience for many youth who have never experienced the great outdoors.

On Tuesday, June 9, our Rotary Club had a very inspiring presentation from Dr. Katie Eastman. Katie, an area grief therapist and coach, has co-authored a book entitled "The Peace Guidebook". This book is a reflective examination on what creates peace that provides a love that reaches outward. Currently, this book is #1 on Amazon. The book helps meet life with calm presence instead of emotional reactivity. Katie is an outstanding speaker, and her presentation touched Rotarians.

It was a special day for the members of the Rotary Club of Mount Vernon. At our Tuesday noon meeting, we honored our June Mount Vernon Students of the Month, Diana Garcia and Christopher Lowe. Also at our meeting, we honored the Rotary Club Teacher of the Year, Stacy Lewis. She teaches Senior English and Literature, and is deeply respected by students, teachers and administrators.

In the evening, I was honored, along with Flora Lucatero, to help present scholarships to 13 well-deserving high school Seniors. My deepest appreciation to the members of our club's Scholarship Committee who helped make these selections.

What a joy to be a part of an organization that values learning and education.
