Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group

Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group Dedicated to restoring salmon for future generations. 🐟

Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group focuses on involving communities in restoring the watersheds of Skagit County, the San Juan Islands, and Northern Whidbey Island. The Skagit River and Island communities are incredible and unique places that need all our help to keep them healthy for years to come. SFEG is committed to engaging our community one project at a time to ensure that each of us can do

something to care for our watersheds. Restoring salmon is not a small task, but with your help we envision a future of streams teeming with salmon!

We will be straight up with you all. We’re great at restoring salmon habitat in the Skagit River Valley. Art? We’ll leave that to the professionals. We’re looking to partner with a local graphic designer or artist this year to create swag to sell, with proceeds going back to us for salmon enhancement in the Skagit River Valley.

The goal of this is collaboration, to highlight both our mission of enhancing salmon populations in the Skagit River Valley and your work as an artist. The only requirement, it has to focus around salmon.

The release timeline will be around salmon spawning season.

If rivers and salmon inspire your work, we’d love to hear from you. Shoot Rose Sandell an email at [email protected] or shoot us a DM with a little bit about yourself and a way to view some of your art (whether a link to a social media page, website or a PDF version of a portfolio).

Everyday is here at Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group. Today, we are joining to bring awareness to Wild Salmon Day and the threats that our salmon populations face. Thank you to Jessica Newley for these amazing photos of Coho Salmon in our local creeks!

So what the heck is a fish passage project, and why won't everyone in Washington stop talking about them? 🛑🐟 Simple - they're SUPER important for allowing native salmon populations to travel safely up and down rivers.

Most fish passage projects focus on culvert replacement. Some culverts are fine, but undersized or poorly placed ones absolutely hate to see us coming. We partner with engineering firms to design a fix, whether that's a new culvert, a bridge crossing, or removing the crossing entirely, then bring in a contractor to rip out the old one and let the river return to its free-flowing self. Multi-year process, but the impacts on salmon are immediate once it's done.

Highlighted below: Carpenter Creek (undersized culvert replaced with a bridge) and East Fork Walker (replaced with a properly sized culvert). Both letting the river flow and the fish swim!

This weekend reminded us why we do what we do! Eight board members spent Saturday with us on our annual board tour, exploring four sites that show exactly how riparian restoration protects salmon habitat. Days like this fuel everything. Can’t wait to do it again next year 🌱✨🌦️

Lamprey scouting season is officially on here at the SFEG!

Why? Before construction begins this summer for a few of our projects, we’re required to complete fish exclusion, aka removing all fish and aquatic species from the area before we break ground. So on Earth Day, we headed out with Monica, a Fish Biologist from WDFW, to get an idea of how many fish we will need to remove.

We visited 4 construction sites to check for Pacific lamprey before the season kicks off. Here’s the thing about lamprey: they bury themselves in the mud and are incredibly easy to miss. That’s why Monica comes out each year with a specialized electrofishing backpack set to a low-frequency pulse that gently “tickles” them out of the sediment. 🪱⚡

By knowing where lamprey are hiding before fish exclusion day, we can make sure as few critters as possible are disturbed during construction. It’s the kind of planning that makes a big difference for the fish — and for the health of the whole watershed.
