Sermon on the Mount - Matthew 7:6 “Know Where to Place What Is Precious”
The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached

STORY: Grace Still Requires Discernment
Have you ever kept giving something valuable to someone who repeatedly treated it like it meant nothing?

Perhaps it was your time, your trust, your help and yes even your faith.

You kept thinking, “Maybe this time will be different.”

Sometimes it was and sometimes it wasn't.

But, there comes a point when we have to understand something important:

Grace does not mean living without boundaries.

Jesus had just warned us about judging others. He told us to examine ourselves before trying to correct somebody else.

Then He says something that may seem surprising:

“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” Matthew 7:6

We should never look at another human being and decide that they have no value, because every person has worth. But that doesn't mean every person should have unlimited access to everything valuable in our lives.
That's where boundaries come in.

Some of us learned this the hard way in addiction and recovery.

We confused loving someone with rescuing them.
We confused forgiveness with trust.
We confused grace with permission.
We confused helping with enabling.
And sometimes we kept handing over our “pearls”—our trust, time, resources, emotional energy, and opportunities—to situations where those things were repeatedly being trampled.

Jesus teaches us that wisdom recognizes when something precious isn't being received as precious.

That doesn't mean we stop loving, but it does mean we should start using discernment.

Jesus calls us to live with both grace and discernment.

Grace says: "You still have value.”

Discernment says: “But this behavior cannot continue.”

Grace says: “I forgive you.”

Discernment says: “Trust will need to be rebuilt.”

Grace says: “I love you.”

Discernment sometimes says: “Because I love you and because I value what God is doing in my life, I need to establish a boundary.”

Grace still requires discernment.
