Are you a small business owner who's ready to hire? You won't want to miss this: Southern Oregon Innovation Hub is partnering with Narwhal Law & Business Strategy on a free Zoom session designed just for you.

Bringing someone on to work for your business comes with legal obligations, and those obligations depend on whether that person is an employee or an independent contractor. Making that call correctly at the start shapes everything that follows, from paperwork to payroll.

Michael Jonas, JD, MBA, is the Owner and Attorney at Narwhal Law & Business Strategy. He advises small businesses and nonprofits on contracts, risk management, and sustainable growth. In this session, he will cover the legal differences between employees and independent contractors and the tests used to determine which category a worker falls into.

He will walk through the compliance steps for hiring employees, best practices for working with contractors, and practical tools for onboarding correctly from day one.

Tuesday, October 13, 4:00 PM PDT
Free one-hour Zoom session

The AGA Business Network Meetup series continues Thursday, October 15, at Red Lily Vineyards in Jacksonville, with an evening for local business owners to connect and learn together.

The program opens with networking, followed by a presentation and group discussion led by Donna Hutchings, a Fractional CFO who works exclusively with owner-operated businesses and the founder of Vintner CFO. Her topic is a situation many owners recognize: revenue is up, the books look fine, and the bank account still feels tighter than it should. That situation is a cash gap, and almost every owner-operated business has one.

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how cash moves through a business and two simple habits to start using right away.

Thursday, October 15, 5 to 7 PM
Red Lily Vineyards, 11777 OR-238, Jacksonville
In person or online

The Business Network Meetup series is hosted by A Greater Applegate in partnership with Jackson County Library Services and the Southern Oregon Innovation Hub.

The next meetup is October 29, a peer roundtable at Valley View Winery.

This workshop has been postponed to a later date. Interested in finding out more about this topic and date options? Direct message us for details.

Plenty of Southern Oregon's most innovative businesses didn't start in a storefront. They started at a kitchen table or in a spare room, built by owners who found a way to get to work without waiting for a traditional office setup. If you're that kind of builder, this workshop is for you.

A Professional Organizer and founder of Efficient Spaces Organizing & Time Services since 2008, Jenny Morin is also the author of Get Organized Quick and an ICF-certified executive coach.

On Tuesday, October 6th at 10:00AM, she's bringing that experience to the Launchpad in Grants Pass for a hands-on workshop on building a home office and workday that actually support your business. Expect practical strategies for setting up a workspace without a traditional office, simple systems for managing paperwork and information, and hands-on tools for handling interruptions without losing your flow.
