Janna Champagne telling her daughter’s cannabis for Autism success story in 2017, in a podcast interview with Jason Wilson for Curious About Cannabis. Whole interview here: https://youtu.be/HFwEn6FYGqU
This was her first declaration of our plan, to launch a cannabis-inclusive care home on her daughter’s behalf, to serve all residents with Autism relying on accommodation of medical cannabis to optimize their quality of life and function.
Our team has since transcended much of the pervasive resistance to this idea, and we are finally on the cusp of launching a private model in Oregon, thanks to our progress:
👉2019 Oregon licensing restrictions on nurses, disallowing service of cannabis patients. The “cannabis nurse gag order” was finally repealed in July 2024, following 5 full years of advocacy, solidifying nurses ability to safely fill their vital role in our model: Thanks to Rachel Prusak and the new members of OSBN for your focus in amending this faulty policy🙏.https://www.oregon.gov/osbn/Documents/IS_LegalizationofCannabisinOregon.pdf
2020 CA Ryan’s Law advocacy, specifically Jim Bartell and Senator Hueso’s success acquiring written confirmation from federal HHS, reflecting they hav not and will not withhold federal medical funding to organizations for accommodating cannabis patient’s needs within the state law parameters: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/h5o1mvxbmrs41s9f5vnch/Hurso-HHS.pdf?rlkey=aug8rdcsvkdvagaig1k5dqt31&st=90cg0ruz&dl=0
👉2021 creation of 501c3 Autism Safe Haven, which provides tax-exempt fundraising to support our vision: creation of cannabis-inclusive Autism care resources. This model will easily expand to support all cannabis patients’ needs for care inclusion, regardless of their diagnosis. We are thankful for our many business sponsors, supporting our mission, and please visit our website for more info: www.autismsafehaven.org
👉2022-2024: ongoing legislative advocacy and education to raise awareness.
👉2024: remodel preparation of a home I’ve owned 20+ years, which is nearly complete, and launching next month as the first private cannabis-inclusive Autism care home in Oregon🙏
👉This is possible thanks to the OR MMJ statute, allowing care organizations to register as the patient’s cannabis caregiver, and protecting their delivery of “all aspects of cannabis care”. This entailed enforcement of ORS443.014, which is currently being disregarded by OR care home licensing division, in favor of more restrictive federal restrictions. Hence the ongoing legal advocacy required to launch a licensed model, which I’m told by my legal team will become more easily enforceable with the upcoming federal schedule shift🙏
I’m thankful for our immense progress, although it’s been a far more challenging journey than we could have imagined. Please consider supporting our mission, with a tax-deductible donation. Thank you 🙏. www.autismsafehaven.org
