For many students, lunch trays, plates, and utensils are used for minutes and then thrown away. Pragrathi, a high school sophomore in the DFW Mid-Cities area, wants to change that.

She is working to reduce single-use plastics in her community because research shows the impacts go beyond the environment. Plastics break down into microplastics that enter our bodies, while compostables often fail to deliver on their promises. Reuse systems are safer, healthier, and more sustainable.

This is the kind of leadership that drives Plastic Reduction Project forward. Change is possible when students, schools, and communities take action together.

What drives real change: Policy, Behavior, or Economic power? 🗳️

At the University of Louisville Sustainability Fair, our Kentucky lead Pam noticed an activity asking people to vote with glass beads. Most votes went to Policy and Behavior, but Pam reminded us how economic action, especially what businesses choose to do, plays a massive role in reducing plastic waste.

That’s why PRP focuses on working directly with local businesses, turning economic influence into environmental progress 🌎💚

At Plastic Reduction Project our mission is to help food and beverage outlets shift from single use to reuse. Washing dishes instead of throwing them away is simple, practical, and powerful. Every customer who dines in benefits, and the impact multiplies across the whole community.

Recycling was supposed to be the answer. For many of us, the blue bin symbolized responsibility and progress. But the more we learned, the clearer it became that recycling plastics has limits, and in many cases does not work the way we were led to believe.

That realization was a turning point. Instead of accepting the status quo, we decided to create a nonprofit that could focus on real solutions. The Plastic Reduction Project was born from the belief that reducing single-use waste and building systems of reuse are the only paths forward.

Zero waste starts with awareness and action.

On Sunday, September 28 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Austin, a community seminar on household waste reduction will feature expert panelists discussing practical ways to cut plastic use, compost more effectively, and strengthen recycling programs. Exhibits on plastic reduction, composting, and recycling will also be available.

It is a chance to learn and exchange ideas on building a more sustainable future. Free lunch is provided with RSVP! Scan the QR code in the flyer for details.
