97% is more than a number. It's a veteran waking up in the same home tomorrow.

It's stability.

It's knowing where you'll sleep tonight.

It's having neighbors who know your name.

Since 2014, 97% of St. Michael's Veterans Center residents have remained permanently housed.

That's what housing stability looks like. And we are so proud to serve our veterans and pour into them just as they bravely sacrificed for us in their service.

Sometimes the barrier between homelessness and housing is smaller than we might imagine.

A security deposit. Transportation to meet a landlord. A phone to receive an important call. Moving expenses. Basic household necessities.

A new U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs policy gives medical centers greater flexibility to help veterans experiencing homelessness address these very real barriers. Assistance can include rental and utility costs, deposits, transportation, communications technology, essential household items and other immediate needs.

It's an important recognition of something those working in veteran housing understand well: securing an apartment is only one part of achieving permanent housing stability.

Removing practical barriers, connecting veterans to resources, and providing ongoing support can help turn an available apartment into a lasting home.

We welcome another tool that helps communities move veterans toward permanent housing.

25 years later, we remember.

Today, we honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who ran toward danger, the families forever changed, and the service members who answered our nation's call in the years that followed.

For an entire generation of veterans, September 11 shaped the course of their military service.

On Patriot Day, we remember the lives lost, honor those who served, and reflect on the courage and unity our nation witnessed in the days that followed.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Our team was honored to join the Kansas City Royals at their fourth-annual Memorial Stair Climb, where Royals staff and coaches climbed 2,200 stairs at the K to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Alongside our friends at The Battle Within, moments like these are incredibly meaningful and rewarding when we can lock arms and honor those who have made sacrifices for our country.

This Labor Day, we're thinking about the role meaningful work can play in building a stable life.

For veterans transitioning from military service or rebuilding after experiencing homelessness, employment can provide far more than income. It can offer routine, purpose, confidence and connection.

That's why employment and financial stability are important parts of the support veterans receive at St. Michael's.

Today, we celebrate the veterans who have built new careers after service, the employers who recognize the skills veterans bring to the workplace, and everyone whose work strengthens our community.

Happy Labor Day!

Earlier this summer, we celebrated a milestone more than a decade in the making: completing Valor House and the original master plan for the St. Michael's Veterans Center campus.

Today, 179 affordable homes are available for veterans on our 24-acre campus. Even more important is what happens after a veteran moves in. Since opening in 2014, 98% of our veterans have remained permanently housed.

We were grateful to KCTV5 News Kansas City for visiting St. Michael's and sharing what this milestone means for Kansas City veterans.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, and the latest numbers remind us why reaching veterans before a crisis matters.

In 2023, 6,398 veterans died by su***de. That's an average of 17.5 veterans every day. Of those veterans, 61% had not received VA healthcare during the previous year.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also identifies homelessness among the circumstances associated with elevated su***de risk.

Su***de prevention therefore extends far beyond what happens inside a healthcare setting.

Stable housing matters. Connection matters. Employment and financial stability matter. Access to physical and mental healthcare matters. Having someone notice when you're struggling matters.

At St. Michael's Veterans Center, these are all part of supporting the whole veteran.

Most importantly, help is available.

Veterans in crisis, or anyone concerned about a veteran, can call 988 and press 1 or text 838255 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line for confidential support 24 hours a day. Several resources are available as well; visit NAMI, Mental Health America, and Kansas City VA Medical Center, among others.

No veteran should have to navigate a crisis alone.
