The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the United Nations Association represents members of the United Nations Association (www.unausa.org) in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Our chapter has established tremendous programs in support of the U.N. including the Mayor’s United Nations Day Dinner (a Kansas City tradition since 1972), the U.N. Peacekeepers Roundtable (in cooperation with the Harry S.

Peace Plaza), and the U.N.A. Roundtable on Food and Agriculture. Our energetic Young Professionals Group has promoted U.N. programs relating to children, refugees and peacekeeping. UNICEF is deeply distressed by the injury of 42 children aged 9 to 14 in an explosion at a school in Shahrak-e-Mahdia in Kabul, Afghanistan.

This alarming incident is yet another stark reminder of the need to protect children and the essential services they rely on at all times.

Schools are protected under international law and must remain safe places where children can learn and thrive, free from fear, violence and harm.

UNICEF echoes calls for a thorough investigation into the incident and for the safety, dignity and rights of all children to be respected and protected at all times.
