This June, newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble brings you Vivian Fung’s String Quartet No. 5: “Spiraling”—a vivid, restless, and emotionally charged work for string quartet.

Written in one continuous movement, Spiraling captures a world in motion: circling patterns, driving energy, and constantly shifting textures that seem to spin, transform, and intensify. Inspired by the turbulence of 2021, Fung’s music reflects the feeling of uncertainty, momentum, and the search for clarity within chaos.

Concert IV Spotlight: Shulamit Ran’s Mirage

This June, newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble invites you into the shimmering sound world of Shulamit Ran’s Mirage.

Written for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, Mirage unfolds through shifting colors, delicate textures, and striking instrumental gestures. The music evokes a sense of distance and imagination—appearing, disappearing, and transforming like a vision just beyond reach.

Ran, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Israeli-American composer, brings together vivid contemporary expression with echoes of memory, breath, and cultural resonance, creating a chamber work that is both intimate and powerful.

Concert IV Spotlight: Elizabeth Raum’s Searching for Sophia

This June, newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble invites you to experience Elizabeth Raum’s Searching for Sophia for oboe and string quartet—a deeply expressive work that moves through memory, prayer, and tradition.

Written in three movements—Dance, Prayer, and Fantasy on a Traditional Theme—the piece brings the oboe into intimate conversation with the string quartet, creating a sound world that is lyrical, reflective, and full of emotional depth. A Canadian composer and oboist herself, Raum gives the instrument a powerful voice of remembrance and resonance.

newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble is seeking administrative and bookkeeping support

newEar is looking for a detail-oriented and organized individual to support the ensemble’s financial, administrative, and concert-related operations.

Responsibilities include bookkeeping support, preparing and paying invoices, assisting with concert performer payments, tracking concert attendance and income, maintaining mailing lists, preparing donor thank-you letters, coordinating annual financial documents with leadership and an accountant, and supporting general business administration.

This role may also include helping with concert logistics such as preparing starter cash and Square, assisting with attendee lists, picking up printed programs and postcards, supporting concert receptions, and checking the post office box.

The ideal person is reliable, organized, comfortable with financial records and basic office administration, and interested in supporting contemporary music in Kansas City.
