There’s no better way to beat the summer heat than time in the pool.

This month, both our children’s and adult programs enjoyed swimming outings that gave students and clients the chance to cool off, move their bodies, connect with friends, and have fun in the community.

At Sherwood, experiences like these are about more than an activity on the calendar. They help build confidence, support social connection, and create meaningful opportunities for everyone to learn, grow, and enjoy time together.

Sherwood Autism Center is proud to celebrate Lesleigh Cetinguc on her selection to the Centurions Leadership Program through the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

The Centurions Leadership Program is a two-year civic leadership initiative designed to prepare emerging leaders to help shape the future of the greater Kansas City region through education, service, mentorship, and community engagement.

Lesleigh’s selection reflects her leadership, her commitment to community, and Sherwood’s belief in developing leaders who can help build a more inclusive and supportive Kansas City.

Congratulations, Lesleigh. We are proud of you and excited to cheer you on throughout this experience.

Meet Alisha!

As Sherwood’s special education compliance coordinator, Alisha helps ensure each student’s Individualized Education Program, or IEP, meets state and federal requirements and timelines.

She coordinates IEP meetings and evaluations, tracks important deadlines, communicates with partnering school districts, maintains documentation, and helps support timely, effective service delivery for students.

Her work is a reminder that strong programs depend on both the care students receive each day and the systems working behind the scenes.

Thank you, Alisha, for the organization, care, and dedication you bring to Sherwood.

Partnerships create access.

Last fall, Sherwood staff met with The Coterie Theatre team to discuss ways the theatre could make its environment more welcoming and accessible for all audience members. The Coterie listened to the guidance that was shared and implemented suggestions to better support neurodivergent patrons.
This month, Sherwood students had the opportunity to see Pete the Cat at The Coterie and experience the adapted space themselves.
It was especially meaningful to see the students who helped inspire those changes utilizing the space. This partnership is a wonderful example of how Sherwood can help schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations learn practical strategies for becoming more welcoming and inclusive.

Sherwood’s Adult Day Services clients enjoyed a month full of enriching programming on campus and in the community.

Highlights included a Fourth of July picnic and yard games, visits to Lakeside Nature Center and Pilgrim Butterfly Garden, swimming at Southeast Community Center, and themed weeks focused on birds, water, insects, and physics.

These activities are more than a busy calendar. Each experience helps support learning, communication, independence, social connection, and meaningful engagement in the community.

ADS also welcomed Tina, a new Day Habilitation Specialist, to the team. We are grateful for the staff who help make these meaningful experiences possible for our clients.
