The American Revolution Has Some Stories You Haven't Heard.

Secret raids. Divided loyalties. Unsung heroes. The fight for American independence unfolded in surprising ways, including right here in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

In celebration of America's 250 years, Heritage Library is sharing fascinating stories of the people and events that helped shape our nation's history.

We’re so grateful for our community partners and friends—especially Culture HHI, The Hilton Head Arts Council and The Gullah Museum. And a big shout-out to Richard Grant and Amos Hummel for all their help at our Crescendo kick-off last week in Shelter Cove.

Crescendo is the island’s month-long celebration of art, history, and culture, and we were thrilled to be part of it this year with a hands-on block printing activity.

Block printing is an art form used by Black and Native American communities during the colonial period. We made several blocks and helped visitors create their own prints to take home.

You can explore all the ongoing Crescendo events here: https://www.hiltonheadisland.org/crescendo-celebrating-arts-culture-history

Special thanks to ://culturehhi.org/ and The Hilton Head Arts Council for making this wonderful community opportunity possible.

Before It Became Our State Symbol, the Palmetto Helped Make History.

A Fort Built of Palmetto Logs. A Victory That Helped Shape a Nation.

On June 28, 1776, American forces defending Charleston Harbor faced a powerful British naval attack. But the unfinished fort on Sullivan's Island, built largely from palmetto logs and sand, proved remarkably resilient.

Under the command of Colonel William Moultrie, South Carolina patriots held their ground and delivered one of the first major American victories of the Revolutionary War.

The battle became a symbol of South Carolina's determination and gave our state one of its most recognizable symbols: the palmetto tree.

Discover the stories that shaped our state and nation.

Emory Campbell of Hilton Head Island has spent his life rising to the occasion. An advocate, educator, scientist and reluctant historian, when his community called, he's always answered. (Full story below.)

The Hilton Head Plantation Women’s Club Road Shows Adventures Group teamed up with The Heritage Library and Vagaobond Cruise for a special anniversary cruise—honoring their 40th year alongside the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Dan Franke served as the Library’s onboard patriot, and Captain Ian Derry kept us cruising in style.

You know it’s an unforgettable day when you get more than a history lesson—you also get a pod of dolphins on a feeding adventure and an American Bald Eagle soaring overhead.

Stay tuned here as we keep partnering with Keith, Shelby, and the wonderful Vagabond Cruise team to curate more voyages that share Hilton Head’s story from the water.

Today, we pause to remember.

On the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders and everyday heroes who demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, the memories of that day remain an important part of our shared American history. As an organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of the past, The Heritage Library joins our community and our nation in remembering those we lost and honoring the resilience and unity that followed.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
