Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. SCNRI exists to support those who choose to begin their careers here and build their lives here. When we help a nurse stay, we help thousands of patients receive the care they need.

The Lowcountry is growing, and so is the pressure on our healthcare system. New facilities, more residents, and an aging population all mean one thing: we need more nurses. SCNRI is helping meet that need by encouraging new graduates to stay local.

Nurse turnover comes with a human cost and a financial one. When healthcare organizations lose nurses at a high rate, they lose valuable experience, continuity of care, mentorship, and team stability. They also face major costs tied to recruiting, onboarding, and replacing staff. Strengthening nurse retention is not just a workforce issue. It is an investment in better care, healthier workplaces, and stronger communities.

My name is Nicki. After 25 years as a barber, I’ve decided to fulfill my lifelong dream about working in themedical profession and became a nurse. This is something I’ve always wanted to do and this SCNRI will help pay off my student loan so I can save money to buy a house and live and work here.

My name is Kasey, I am a 26-year-old new graduate nurse and proud mother of a medically complex 7-year- old son with cerebral palsy. My journey into nursing was deeply shaped by my experience as his caregiver.
Navigating his medical needs, therapies, hospitalizations, and day-to-day challenges gave me a profound respect for the impact that compassionate, skilled nursing care can have on both patients and their families.

Caring for my son inspired me to pursue nursing so I could advocate for patients like him and support families facing similar circumstances. I understand firsthand the importance of clear communication, patience, and collaboration across disciplines, especially in complex care environments.

The SCNRI grant will make a meaningful difference for me as a new graduate nurse by providing financial support that allows me to remain in the area as I begin my career. Having the stability to focus on building my clinical skills and growing within the profession, rather than worrying about immediate financial pressures, would help me establish a strong foundation in nursing and continue serving my community long-term.

My name is Brandi Benningfield, and I graduated from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in December 2025. I currently work full-time as a registered nurse in the Emergency Room at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to work as a nurse in the Lowcountry and give back to this wonderful community. I chose nursing because, growing up, I saw the impact nurses made on my family members during hospital stays, and I knew I wanted to make that same difference for other families by being a source of support during their hardest moments. The SCNRI scholarship is helping make it possible for my husband and me to live in Beaufort County while also paying toward my student loans. I want to focus on being the best Emergency Room nurse I can be and serving the community I live in, and this scholarship is helping me do that.
